Scott City takes two from Colby

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a breezy day in Scott City, the Beavers returned to league play, as they would host the Colby Eagles. Colby entered the day atop the regional standings. At the end of the day, the Beavers would pick up a pair of wins, rallying in the seventh to win 8-7, and took the finale in five innings 11-1.

In a game where Scott City led most of the way, the Beavers would have to win on a walk-off. Scott City opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning, thanks to a two-run home run by Avery Radke to give them the early 2-0 advantage. Scott City would add runs in the third and fourth to lead 4-0, before a four-run fifth inning saw the Eagles rally to tie the game at four. The Beavers tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Eagles would plate three runs in their final at bat and take a 7-6 lead. However, Scott City would have the final say. They would get the winning run on an Emilio Contreras RBI single to take an 8-7 win in the opener.

Eloy Ruelas went 6 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Easton Eisenhour got the final out, despite giving up a hit. Emilio Contreras had four hits and one RBI and Avery Radke had two hits and drove in three runs in the win. For Colby, Braxton Withington went four innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with nine strikeouts. Cobin Curry took the loss giving up four runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings work. Four different Eagles had two hits each.

Colby would score the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. That run would hold up until the bottom of the third, when the Scott City bats came to life. A four-run inning would give the Beavers a 4-1 advantage through three innings. They would blow the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Beavers had the first seven batters reach before an out was recorded. Colby would be retired in order in the fifth, as Scott City was able to complete the sweep in an 11-1 win.

Easton Eisenhour struck out eight in five innings of work, and scattered three hits with an unearned run given up. Hunter Fry and Avery Radke had three hits and two RBI, while Spencer Cramer drove in three runs. Kellen Burvee took the loss, going 3 2/3 innings, allowing 11 runs, eight earned, on 15 hits. Brayden Foss had the lone RBI for Colby.

Scott City improved to 8-4 overall, 4-2 in GWAC play. They’ll have a week off before they host Cimarron next Tuesday. Colby dropped to 7-4 overall, 2-2 in league play, as they’ll host Burlington for one game on Thursday.
