Scott City swept by Cimarron in regular season finale
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The regular season for Cimarron and Scott City would wrap up Thursday night at the Scott Community Event Center, as the Beavers played host to the Bluejays in GWAC play. Both games would be competitive and entertaining, as Cimarron would come out with a couple wins heading into sub-state play next week. The Lady Bluejays built up a big lead in the third quarter and held on for a 44-36 win, while the Cimarron boys would escape a nailbiter in a 37-36 victory.
Cimarron Girls 44, Scott City 36
For a second straight meeting, it would be a lengthy drought that Cimarron would take advantage of. This time around, it would come in the middle two quarters. Scott City started out with hot shooting, and took an 11-8 first quarter lead. The Lady Bluejays would use a 12-2 second quarter run to take a 21-13 lead, and score the first four points of the third frame to lead 25-17 with 5:41 left in the third quarter. While the Lady Beavers would pull to within seven at 27-20 with two minutes left in the third period, Cimarron was able to score the final eight points to lead 35-20 going into the fourth quarter. Scott City began the fourth period with a 12-2 run, and got to within 36-32 with 2:46 left. However, an 8-0 Lady Bluejay run would push the game out to 42-34 with 57 seconds left, as they teams would trade two points in the final 20 seconds, and Cimarron came away with the 44-36 win.
McKayla Miller led the way for Cimarron with 16 points, while Emily Acton added 13. The Lady Bluejays went 13-17 at the free throw line and had 18 turnovers. Scott City was led by Brooke Strine with 12 points, as they went just 4-9 at the line and finished with 12 turnovers.
With the win, Cimarron swept the season series, and now leads the series 12-9. They finished with Colby in a tie for third place in the GWAC standings. Scott City finished in a tie with Holcomb for fifth place.

Cimarron Boys 37, Scott City 36
This game would feature some runs to go along with a dramatic finish. The Bluejays would lead all but the last 14 seconds of the first half, and they did it with the three pointer. Cimarron lead 9-4 after the first quarter, and 12-4 early in the second, when the Beavers would outscore Cimarron 13-2 over the final 6:57 of the first half to take a 17-16 halftime lead. Cimarron’s 15 points came off five three’s, while Scott City had 14 of their 17 points on seven two-point baskets. To begin the second half, the Bluejays would hit their first five shots, and six of their first eight, as they would go on a 15-2 run during that stretch to take a 29-19 lead with 2:14 left in the third quarter. The Beavers scored the final six points of the period to pull to within 29-25 heading into the fourth quarter. Cimarron would lead 33-27 with 4:46 left, when Scott City would use a 7-0 run to take a 34-33 lead with 2:22 left. The Bluejays scored the next four points to lead 37-34 with 23 seconds remaining. Scott City got a basket with 4 seconds left to get to within one at 37-36. Cimarron would miss the front end of a one-and-one, and the Beavers would collect the rebound, but a half-court heave at the end fell short, and the Bluejays would come out with the one-point win.
Braxton Harrison led the way with 14 points, while Seth Ridenour added 12 for Cimarron. The Bluejays were 2-3 at the line and had 11 turnovers. Scott City got 11 points from Gus Hawkins, as they were 3-6 at the free throw line and finished with 11 turnovers.
It was the first time that the schools had played twice in a season, and Cimarron won their first meeting. Scott City leads the all-time series 15-1. The Bluejays finished in sole possession of fourth place, while the Beavers await Friday’s Hugoton/Ulysses game to see if they will finish in a tie for sixth.

Both schools will begin sub-state play on Monday. The girls will take the court, as Scott City will be at Lakin, while Cimarron hosts Southwestern Heights. On the boys side, Scott City plays at Lakin on Tuesday, while Cimarron visits Hoisington on Tuesday.
