Scott City swept at Colby
Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday’s doubleheader at the Colby Community Building between Scott City and Colby saw not only the teams take the court for the first time in six days, but also had a similar theme in both games. The Beavers would lead each half, and fail to convert a field goal in the final quarter, as the Lady Beavers would fall 41-37, and the Eagle boys pulled away for a 46-34 win.

The first of two scheduled meetings would be a perimeter game throughout. Colby grabbed a 12-8 lead after the first quarter, before a 16-7 Scott City run would put the Lady Beavers up 24-19 at the break. Scott City opened the second quarter with a three pointer to grab their largest lead of the game 27-19 with a little over 30 seconds into the second half. Both teams would trade baskets back and forth, before the Lady Eagles made their run. The Lady Beavers led 35-28 with 1:29 left in the third frame, before Colby pulled to within 35-32 heading into the fourth quarter. To begin the fourth quarter, the Lady Eagles scored eight straight to lead 40-37 with 2:54 left. Scott City was only able to get to within 40-37 with 2:09 left. Colby would hit a free throw with under a minute left, as the teams would turn the ball over late. The Lady Beavers didn’t have a field goal for the final 9:29 of the game, were victim to a 7:40 scoring drought in the last two quarters.
Emma Curry bookended big scoring quarters, and finished with a team-high 19 points for Colby, while Brooklyn Jones added 14. The Lady Eagles were 5-8 at the line and had nine turnovers. Scott City got a career-high 26 points from Amber Latta, who had 20 points in the first half. The Lady Beavers were 3-4 at the line and had 13 turnovers.
With the win, Colby improves to 54-17 in the series since 1980, and snapped a seven-game losing streak to Scott City in Colby. The Lady Beavers lost to the Lady Eagles in Colby for the first time since January of 2016, and have dropped four consecutive games for the first time since 2016.

Much like the girls game, Colby would jump out to an early lead, only to see Scott City lead at the break. The Eagles raced out to an 8-3 lead midway through the opening quarter, before the Beavers closed out with an 8-5 run to get to within 13-11 after eight minutes of play. The teams traded baskets early on in the second quarter, and trailing 18-16, Scott City closed out the half with five straight to lead 21-18 at intermission. They would push their lead to 27-20 with 5:51 left in the third quarter, when Colby would heat up from the floor. A 14-5 run in the final 5:41 of the third period gave the Eagles a 34-32 lead going into the fourth frame. The Beavers would get good looks, but were unable to drop any shots in, as Colby scored the first 12 points before the Beavers scored their only points of the final period in a 46-34 Eagle win. Scott City went the final 9:53 of the game without a basket, and had a scoring drought of 7:35 in the second half, that saw Colby score 15 straight.
Leading the way for Colby was Ryan Myers with 27 points. the Eagles finished 0-5 at the free throw line and had 10 turnovers. For a third straight game, Scott City did not have a double figure scorer, as Josh Rosin and Lawson Bailey each had nine points on three pointers. The Beavers finished with nine turnovers and were 4-4 at the free throw line.
Colby has now won four consecutive in the series over the Beavers for the first time since December of 2002 to December of 2003. It was also the first time since 2003 that the Eagles have won back to back games against Scott City in Colby. The Eagles lead the series 39-34 since 1980.

Scott City will return to practice on Monday, January 4, and will play at Hugoton on Friday January 8. They were originally scheduled to host Goodland on Tuesday, January 5. Instead, the games with the Cowboys are rescheduled for Saturday, January 30. Due to the ruling by KSHSAA Board of Directors, the first day of competition after the moratorium is January 8. The non-practice dates this year have been extended one week, and will run from December 23-January 3. Colby will play at Dodge City on Friday, January 8 for their next games.
