Scott City sweeps Ulysses in GWAC play

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers played in their first home game in 28 days on Tuesday night, as they played host to the Ulysses Tigers in Great West Activities Conference play. It would be a doubleheader sweep for the Beavers, as the girls picked up a 62-30 win, while the boys had to fight off the Tigers 56-48.

Scott City jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never trailed. The closest the Lady Tigers could get would be six on a pair of occasions in the first quarter, as the Lady Beavers jumped out to a 16-8 lead heading in to the second frame. Scott City (4-4, 2-2 GWAC) started the first six minutes of the second quarter on a 24-2 run and led 40-10 late in the first half, before settling for a 44-15 halftime lead. They grew their lead to 48-15 early in the third quarter, when Ulysses (1-8, 0-5) made a run of six straight to make it 48-21 with 6:08 remaining in the third stanza. The Beavers would grow their lead to 60-24 after three quarters, and a running clock would be used in the final quarter, as Scott City picked up a 62-30 win.

Piper Fox would have a career-high 15 points for Scott City, while Avery Lewis added 12. The Lady Beavers had 15 turnovers and finished 12-21 at the foul line. Ulysses got nine points from Erisbllie Alvarado, as they had 19 turnovers. The Tigers were 6-11 from the free throw line.

With the win, Scott City has now won nine straight in the series, the longest streak since 2001-04. The Lady Beavers now hold a 52-37 series lead since 1980.

The No. 8 ranked team in Class 3A had their hands full all night, but a run late in the third quarter would be the difference. Scott City started out hot shooting, taking a 17-7 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter. Ulysses would rally back on an 11-2 run to pull to within 19-18. The Beavers scored the next four points, only to see the Tigers rally to take their first lead at 24-23 with 1:24 left in the break, until a Scott City (7-1, 3-1 GWAC) took a 27-24 lead. Ulysses (3-6, 1-4) scored the first four points of the second half to take 28-27 lead in the first minute of the third stanza. The game would be tied at 32 with five minutes left in the third quarter, when the Beavers used a 12-2 run to take a 44-34 lead into the final stanza. Neither team could score for the first part of the fourth quarter. Scott City got the first points to grab their largest lead at 46-34 with 4:26 left. The Tigers would not go away as they they would get to within seven points twice, with the last being with 26 seconds left at 55-48, before a late free throw gave Scott City a 56-48 win.

Jackson Rumford led all scorers with 26 points and nine rebounds, his 16th career 20-point performance. Alex Tarango added 10 points, as Scott City went 10-13 from the free throw line and had eight turnovers. Ulysses was led by Julian Meraz with 18 points, while Corban Dierking added 13 points and Caden Ladesma had 11 points. The Tigers went 5-11 from the foul line and committed 19 turnovers.

With the win, Scott City has now won three straight against the Tigers in Scott City, and have won four of the last five in the series. The Beavers lead the all-time series since 1980 61-26.
