Scott City Sweeps Ulysses

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in their final games before the Christmas break, the Scott City Beavers picked up their first doubleheader sweep of the year, as the girls won for the first time with a 46-36 win over the Lady Tigers, while the boys picked up a 75-61 win. It was the GWAC opener for both teams.

In the first game of the night, the Lady Beavers were able to hold leads after each quarter, including 11-8 after one, 20-17 at the half and 26-22 after three quarters. Ulysses had only one lead of the night, which came at 17-16 with 2:39 remaining before halftime. Scott City had seven and six point leads in the first half, but the Lady Tigers were able to mount comebacks each time. After a cold shooting third period by both teams, the fourth quarter got going, as the Lady Beavers outscored Ulysses 20-14. A majority of the points in the last period came from the foul line. Scott City scored 14 of their 20 points from the foul line to put the game away, as they grab their first win, and also their first league victory. Leading the way for the Lady Beavers (1-3, 1-0 GWAC) was Janessa Lowenthal with a game-high 20 points, while Ulysses (0-5, 0-1) was paced by Morgan Price’s 10 points.

The final game of the evening saw the underdog Ulysses Tiger boys hang close with Scott City in the first half. After leading 36-26 at the break, the Beavers used a 21-10 run in the third quarter to make it 57-36 after three quarters. In the fourth, Scott City built it up to 66-40 with 5:04 remaining, before the Tigers fought back, but the damage had already been done. Ulysses used the three point shot to keep them in the game, as they converted nine in the game. The Beavers, however, never trailed in the game, using runs of nine, nine and five to open things up in the second, third and fourth quarters. Drew Kite led all scorers with 19 points for Scott City (4-0, 1-0 GWAC), while Joey Meyer added 15, Brett O’Neil had 14 and Trey O’Neil chipped in 11. Ulysses (2-3, 0-1) saw their two-game win streak end, and had three players in double figures, led by Tregg Rodriguez with 15, Kyler Barlow had 14, and Tate Annis finished with 12 points. In the win, Scott City extended its win streak to 26 consecutive games, and have now won 23 straight league games, dating back to February 19, 2010, when they were members of the MSAA. Also, the Beavers wend undefeated in the 2012 calendar year.

Scott City will not play another game until Friday, January 4, when they host Hugoton, while Ulysses has two home games this week with Liberal Tuesday and Colby Thursday.
