Scott City sweeps Hoisington to open season

Hoisington, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–To open the season on Friday, Scott City faced Hoisington on the road in a battle of teams in the Scott City Sub-State group. It would be a big night for both Beaver teams, as the girls used stifling defense in a 44-23 victory, while the boys completed the sweep with a 64-36 rout.

Both teams had a tough time getting any offense in the first quarter, as both teams hit just one field goal. The difference would be Scott City’s free throws. After the first period, the Lady Beavers would use tough defense and settle in offensively. Hoisington led just once at 2-1 about midway through the first quarter. Scott City took a 5-2 lead into the second quarter, and led by 1 at 9-8, when they would close the final 3:18 of the half with six straight to lead 15-8 at the break. The Lady Cardinals would go on nearly an eight-minute drought in the second and third quarters, as the Lady Beavers built a 17-8 lead. Scott City closed the final three minutes of the third frame with an 8-3 run to lead 25-14, and exploded with 19 points in the final period to take a 44-23 win. Hoisington’s lone points in the second half came on five three-point baskets.

Leading the way for the Lady Beavers was McKenzie Metzger with a career-high 13 points. Scott City shot 8-18 from the free throw line and committed 19 turnovers. Leading Hoisington was Marley Bittel with nine points, all on three’s. The Lady Cardinals had 31 turnovers and were just 1-3 from the charity line. Scott City grabbed 22 boards unofficially in the win.

It was Scott City’s first win in Hoisington since 2003, when they won 40-39. They now lead the all-time series 13-6. It’s the eighth season-opening win for the Lady Beavers in the last nine seasons.

Scott City had control of the game from the opening tip. They would start out 10-0 over the first four minutes of the opening stanza, and took a 14-4 lead after the first period. The Beavers never led by fewer than eight points for the rest of the night, as they opened a 23-10 halftime lead. To begin the second half, Scott City would use another 10-0 run to build a 33-10 lead with 6:29 left in the third quarter. Hoisington scored 22 points in the middle two quarters of the game, as they would have all but two field goals come from beyond the three point line. The Beavers built a 46-26 lead after three quarters. To open the fourth, Hoisington scored two straight baskets to pull to within 46-30, but a run of six straight and nine straight would push the Scott City to 28 points, as they ended up with a 64-36 victory.

Alex Tarango poured in a career-best 19 points, while sophomore Junior Meza made the most of his first career start with 16 points, and Avery Radke added a career-high 10 points. Scott City went 13-17 from the line and had 12 turnovers. Hoisington got a career-high 20 points from Rhen Galla, as he drained four triples in the win. The Cardinals were only 1-4 from the foul line and had 21 turnovers.

With the win, the Beavers have now won eight straight in the series dating back to 2002, and lead the all-time series 16-4. It’s the 11th straigtht season that Scott City has won their first game of the season.
