Scott City sweeps Goodland
Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–With one final game before the Christmas break, Scott City was looking to build confidence and take momentum into the break. And the Beavers would deliver in a pair of games. The Lady Beavers would lead the entire way to take a 58-46 win, while the Beaver boys looked dominant in a 65-24 victory.
Scott City Girls 58, Goodland 46
It started from the opening tip for Scott City, as they scored five points to take a 5-0 lead in the first 78 seconds of the game. They would build their lead to 16-9 after the first quarter. After leading 18-9 with 7:40 left in the first half, Scott City saw the Cowgirls go on an 11-4 run to pull to within 22-20 with 4:16 left in the half. The Lady Beavers went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes, and eventually took a 33-21 halftime lead. Scott City (4-2, 2-0 GWAC) would lead by 15 on several occasions in the second half, with their first one being at 41-26 with 1:41 left in the third quarter. The Lady Beavers led 45-32 after three quarters. Goodland (2-4, 1-1) would win the fourth quarter 14-13, and did pull to within nine at 47-38 with 6:29 left, but Scott City would continue their trend to pull away after each Cowgirl run.
Leading the way for Scott City was Lyndi Rumford with 16 points, while Emily Weathers added 14 points. The Lady Beavers had three other players score at least eight points. They went 16-23 from the foul line, and had 30 turnovers. Goodland got a career-best 30 points from St. Francis transfer Taighe Weeter. The Cowgirls had 33 turnovers and were 6-13 from the free throw line. Scott City dominated the glass 35-19.
With the win, Scott City is 2-0 to open league play for the third straight season, and it’s the last time they have done that since the 2001-02 to the 2003-04 seasons. It was also the fifth straight win in the series by the Lady Beavers, the longest winning streak in series history for Scott City. Goodland still leads the series since 1985 25-23.

Goodland score the first two points of the game. After that, it was all Scott City. The Beavers used runs of 9, 12, 13 and closed out the half on an 8-0 run. Scott City led 23-7 after the first quarter, and used an overall run of 21-3 in the second quarter to lead 44-10 at the break. In the second half, the scoring would slow down, but the Beavers kept extending their lead. Despite both teams scoring 10 third quarter points, a running clock would be used in the fourth quarter. Scott City (3-3, 1-1 GWAC) did outscore the Cowboys 10-4 in the fourth quarter, as they snapped a two-game slide. Goodland (0-6, 0-2) is off to one of their toughest starts in at least 13 years.
Leading the way for Scott City was Marshall Faurot with 22 points, while Hunter Yager, Joe Evans and Jackson Lewis each had eight. The Beavers had just 12 turnovers and were 4-8 from the free throw line. Goodland was led by Mark Rodriguez with seven points, all in the second half. The Cowboys finished 5-8 that the line and had 22 turnovers. Scott City won the rebounding battle 26-20.
The win by the Beavers saw them allow their fewest points in a game, since allowing 24 points to Colby in a 56-24 win on December 20 of 2016. Scott City has now 28-3 vs Goodland since 2000.
