Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their first of two meetings this season, the Scott City Beavers collected their third sweep of an opponent this season, as the Lady Beavers rallied from a seven-point deficit early in the third quarter to defeat the Goodland Cowgirls 53-44, while the Beaver boys put the Cowboys away early on in a 76-30 rout.

The girls game proved to be a close game throughout, especially in the first quarter. Both teams were tied three times and swapped two leads, as Goodland ended up taking a 17-14 advantage heading into the second quarter. After a high scoring affair in the opening period, the teams cooled down a bit, with the Cowgirls extending their lead to 25-20 at intermission. They would open up their lead to as big as seven at 27-20, two minutes into the second half, and that’s when the Scott City offense started to come to life. A 16-6 run in the final 5:55 of the third period would give the Lady Beavers a 36-33 lead going into the final period, a lead that they would not surrender. The closest the Cowgirls would get in the final quarter was three points on a pair of occasions, before the final was expanded to nine twice, including the final of 53-44. Scott City (3-13, 2-5 GWAC) snapped a two-game losing streak, and were led by Janessa Lowenthal’s game-high 23 points. Goodland (3-13, 0-6) saw their losing skid extended to eight games, and got 11 points from Brianna White, and 10 each from Hope Cochran and Faith Bierman.
