Scott City Sweeps Goodland

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their first of two meetings this season, the Scott City Beavers collected their third sweep of an opponent this season, as the Lady Beavers rallied from a seven-point deficit early in the third quarter to defeat the Goodland Cowgirls 53-44, while the Beaver boys put the Cowboys away early on in a 76-30 rout.

The girls game proved to be a close game throughout, especially in the first quarter. Both teams were tied three times and swapped two leads, as Goodland ended up taking a 17-14 advantage heading into the second quarter. After a high scoring affair in the opening period, the teams cooled down a bit, with the Cowgirls extending their lead to 25-20 at intermission. They would open up their lead to as big as seven at 27-20, two minutes into the second half, and that’s when the Scott City offense started to come to life. A 16-6 run in the final 5:55 of the third period would give the Lady Beavers a 36-33 lead going into the final period, a lead that they would not surrender. The closest the Cowgirls would get in the final quarter was three points on a pair of occasions, before the final was expanded to nine twice, including the final of 53-44. Scott City (3-13, 2-5 GWAC) snapped a two-game losing streak, and were led by Janessa Lowenthal’s game-high 23 points. Goodland (3-13, 0-6) saw their losing skid extended to eight games, and got 11 points from Brianna White, and 10 each from Hope Cochran and Faith Bierman.

In the finale of the night, the top team in Class 3A put the game away early on. The Beavers scored the first 12 points of the game in the first half of the quarter. They also used an 18-0 run from late in the first quarter to the 4:42 mark of the second period, and too a 34-7 lead. Scott City’s lead over the Cowboys eventually grew to 49-14 at halftime. Goodland was unable to get much offense going in the third quarter either, as the Beavers held them to eight points. Scott City took a 72-22 lead going into the final quarter, with their 50-point lead being the biggest lead of the night. The final eight minutes saw a running clock, per rules of the GWAC with a minimum of a 30-point margin. The Cowboys ended up outscoring the Beavers 8-4 in the final period. Scott City (14-1, 7-0 GWAC) was led by their post players, as Drew Kite finished with a game-high 20 points, while Joey Meyer added 12. Goodland (6-10, 2-4) saw no one in double figures, but were led by Gannon Ihrig’s nine points.

Scott City will host the TMP-Marian Monarchs for Winter Homecoming Friday night, while Goodland returns home to host Ulysses.
