Scott City sweeps Coronado in Roundball Classic
Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In the second day of the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic, Scott City made the trip down to Garden City to face the Coronado Cougars inside The Garden at Garden City High School. It would be a doubleheader sweep, as the Lady Beavers score the first 26 points en route to a 73-9 win, while the boys pulled away late to take a 55-33 victory.

The Lady Beavers went back to their style of basketball with solid defense, and high percentage shots early, and never looked back. They would jump out on Coronado (0-5) with a 26-0 lead in the first seven minutes, before a banked in three put the Lady Cougars on the board late in the final quarter. Scott City (2-1) Scored the next nine points and eventually took a 47-5 halftime lead. In the second half, the Lady Beavers pulled their starters midway through the third quarter, as the bench would dominate, and get competition in varsity play. A 15-2 fourth quarter run saw the game end 73-9.
All 11 players for Scott City who entered would score. Four Lady Beavers had career highs, including McKenzie Metzger who had 14 points, while Piper Fox and Katie Weathers had 12 points for career-bests and Crissa Irvin had a career-high 10 points. The Lady Beavers finished 8-12 at the charity line and had 15 turnovers.
Four players scored one basket for Coronado, who was led by Astoria Spradlin’s three points, as they ended with 34 turnovers and were 0-3 at the foul line.
Scott City is now 6-0 all time against Coronado and have won 12 straight against Colorado schools.

Other than when it was tied early, Scott City had control of the game through out, thanks to their defense. Following the tie, the Beavers closed the first period on a 13-5 run to take a 17-9 lead. After the six-minute mark of the second frame, Scott City (3-0) would build up a double digit advantage that would not dip under, as they used a 10-2 run to lead 29-13 midway through the second quarter, and led 29-15 at the break. They grew their lead to 38-22 late in the third, but would go on a five-minute scoring drought in the process. However, Coronado (0-5) scored just two points during that time frame. The Beavers would close the final 2:41 of the game with eight straight, on their way to a 55-33 win.
Jackson Rumford led the Beavers with 14 points, despite playing through foul trouble, Junior Meza added 13 and Eloy Ruelas had a season-high 10 points. The Beavers were 9-12 at the foul line and had 13 turnovers. Coronado was led by Jalyn Jarboe with 15 poitns, as they had went just 2-3 at the free throw line and finished with 25 turnovers on the afternoon.
With the win, Scott City has extended their series lead over the Cougars to 4-2, and have won the last three in the series.
