Scott City sweep; Beavers track take GWAC team titles

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the last five years, two teams have had a stranglehold on the Great West Activities Conference. Ulysses boys and Colby girls reigned supreme during that time frame. In fact, the last time Scott City’s boys own the GWAC meet was the inaugural meet in Holcomb in 2011. Not only did the boys repeat that sequence, the girls joined the party, as the Lady Beavers became the second girls team ever to win a GWAC meet, dethroning six-time champion Colby.

For the girls, it may have been one of the most dominating runs by a team, as Scott City won 11 of 18 events to cruise to the victory. The Lady Beavers defeated Goodland by 68 points. Dulce Ayala led the charge, winning the 800m dash, and was the lead runner for the winning 4×400 and 4x800m relays. Paige Winderlin added three golds, sweeping the 200 and 400m dashes and was the anchor for the 4x400m relay. Add in a pair of wins for Makaela Stevens in the 1600 and 32oom runs. Hocomb’s Kim Sinoy swept the hurdles races, as they finished in third.

In the boys division, it was a tighter race, as Scott City led for a majority of the meet, defeating Hugoton by 21 points. Jack Thomas won three golds, taking the 1600 and 3200m runs, and was the lead runner for the winning 4x800m relay. Marshal Faurot took the league title in the pole vault and was second in the high jump, and both hurdles races. Hugoton was second, as they were led by their 4×400 and 4x800m relay teams, taking the top spot, and Pedro Ordonez won the 400m dash and was the lead runner on their 4×400 relay team. Tony Kinser broke the league record in the high jump. Holcomb’s Carter Blackburn led the Longhorns into third place, sweeping both hurdles races.

Up next is regionals next Friday. Class 4A will be in Buhler with Colby, Goodland, Holcomb, Scott City and Ulysses attending that regional, while Hugoton will head to Cheney for the Class 3A Regional.
