Scott City stomps Colby

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It had been 10 days since the Scott City Beavers took the court. Friday night, you woudn’t have ever known that, as the Beavers hit six of their first eight shots from the field, and cruised to a 64-29 win over the Colby Eagles at the Max Jones Field House in the first Sub-State semi-final game of the evening. The win put Scott City into the sub-state championship game for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons, and was the third win over the Eagles this season. 

Scott City was able to take away any hope for Colby to pull off the stunner in the first half. With a pair of 6-0 runs and an 8-0 run in the first quarter, the Beavers jumped out to a 26-5 first period lead. Their last run from the first to the second quarter ended up being another 8-0 run, as the Eagles did not score in consecutive possessions in the first half. In fact they only accomplished that one time all night. Scott City (18-3) was able to open their lead to 40-11 at the break, and 57-26 after three quarters. For the final eight minutes, a running clock was used, as the Beavers were able to play their bench quite a few minutes, which allowed the starters to rest up for Saturday’s sub-state final. Overall, nine Beavers scored in the game. Trey O’Neil ended up with a game-high 22 points, and had nine rebounds, and unofficially was close to a triple-double. Brett Meyer pitched in 11 points. Colby (2-19) got 11 from Cameron Brown and 10 from Luke Cox playing in their final games in an Eagle uniform. 

Scott City will face the Goodland Cowboys for the third time this season for a trip to the Class 4A, Division II State Tournament March 13-15 for the boys. The Cowboys scored the final nine points of their game against Hugoton to win 59-51 to head to their first sub-state title game since 2007. Goodland defeated the Beavers 46-42 in Goodland on February 11, and Scott City returned the favor two weeks later in a 58-43 win.
