Scott City splits with Goodland

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday’s games for Scott City at Goodland would be the final games that would count toward the sub-state standings, which are scheduled to be released on Wednesday. Interestingly enough, both Goodland and the Beavers are not in the same sub-state. In the end, the schools would split the competitive doubleheaders, as the Cowgirls pulled away late for a 43-36 win, while Scott City would hold on in the boys game 44-41.

The Lady Beavers would push the No. 5 team in Class 3A to the end. Tuesday’s final score did not show how close the game would be throughout. Other than the seven-point margin in the end, neither side led by more than two possessions for a vast majority of the night. Scott City would lead for most of the night, taking a 5-4 lead after the first period. Over the second period of play, the Lady Beavers would take the lead, only to see the Cowgirls tie it back up, as the teams tied five times in the second period, and would lead to the locker room tied up at 18. Scott City scored five of the first seven points of the second half, taking a 23-20 lead a minute in to the third frame. Trailing 24-22, Goodland took their first lead with 5:16 left in the third quarter, using an 8-0 run to lead 30-24 with 1:32 left in the quarter. The Lady Beavers scored the final four points of the period to pull to within two heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, the Cowgirls would pull away late, thanks to their free throw shooting. A 10-2 run over a four-minute stretch gave them a 42-32 lead with 30 seconds left. Scott City scored four of the final points of the game, and fell 43-36.

Goodland was led by Talexa Weeter with 15 points, as they went 17-29 from the foul line, including an 11-18 effort in the fourth quarter. The Cowgirls finished with 13 turnovers. Scott City got 12 points from Erika Felker, as they finished 9-11 at the line with 22 turnovers.

With the win, Goodland has won two straight in the series for the first time since February 23, 2016 & January 27, 2017, and now lead the series since 1980 34-30. The Cowgirls finished second in the GWAC, which is their highest finish since 2016.

The finale of the evening would see four ties and four lead changes to go along with some big runs by both teams. It would be a game that Goodland would need in regards to their seeding for sub-state. Scott City had already been firmly set in the eight spot in the Larned sub-state, while the Cowboys needed a win to avoid a three-way tie with Colby and Phillipsburg for the final first round home sub-state game. Trailing early 5-2, the Beavers would score the final eight points of the period, as Lawson Bailey scored all eight, capped off by a three point shot across half court to give Scott City the 10-5 lead after the first quarter. Goodland would open up the second frame on a tear, scoring the first 12 points of the quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 17-10 midway through the second period. The Beavers bounced back with six straight, before both teams would go back and forth down the stretch of the first game, as the Cowboys took a 25-21 lead at the break. Goodland matched their largest lead at 30-23 with 5:13 left, when Scott City would rally in a big way. A 13-0 run over a three minute stretch gave the Beavers their largest lead of the game at 36-30 with 1:36 left in the third quarter. Their run to close out the quarter would be at 15-2, as they took a 38-32 lead heading into the fourth. In the final eight minutes, Scott City would lead 41-33 with 5:32 left, only to see Goodland score the next six point to pull to within 41-39 with 4:28 left. The Beavers would hold on, despite every Cowboy chance down the stretch. Leading 44-41 late in the game, Goodland would have three chance to tie the game late. However, the Scott City defense would guard the perimeter well, and a last-ditch effort by the Cowboys would go out of bounds with 0.2 seconds left, as the Beavers held on for the 44-41 win.

Gus Hawkins came off the bench to lead Scott City with a career-high 12 points, 11 coming in the second half, while Carter Gooden grabbed nine boards in the win. The Beavers were 6-11 at the free throw line and had 18 turnovers. Goodland got 11 points from Brennan Brumbaugh, with eight of his points coming from the foul line. The Cowboys went 12-18 at the free throw line, and had 20 turnovers.

With the win, Scott City leads the series 39-29 since 1979, and swept the season series for the second time in three years. Goodland came in 4-2 over their last six games after they lost to the Beavers on January 30.

The brackets will be released Wednesday. Goodland’s girls will host either Russell or Minneapolis on Monday, and their boys will either host a sub-state game, or travel to Colby or Phillispburg next Tuesday, as those three teams are in a three-way tie for the fourth spot in the Norton sub-state.
