Scott City Splits With Denver South
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City opened up their season Thursday night at home in the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic against Denver South. The Rebels had already played two games on the girls side and the boys three, including a tournament championship. By the night’s end, Denver South would take the girls game 69-51, while the Scott City Boys won 85-74 over the Rebels.
The girls game saw a seesaw battle through the first nine minutes. Seven lead changes and two ties took place in the first nine minutes of the game. After Denver South retook the lead 21-20, the Lady Rebels gradually pulled away late in the game. Scott City trailed 36-28 at half, ending on a 6-0 run. The momentum the Lady Beavers had going into the locker room ended, as Denver South built their lead to as many as 18 late in the third frame. In the fourth period, Scott City was able to pull to within 53-46 with 5:59 left in the game, but a 16-5 run by the Lady Rebels ended the game. Three players ended up in double figures for Denver South, led by 5-9 Senior Nasha Bile with a game-high 24 points, including six three-point shots, while Naudia Sweets had 21 and Kendra Martin finished with 16 for Denver South (2-1). Scott City (0-1) was led by Janessa Lowenthal’s 17 points and Kelly Wycoff with 14.
In the nightcap, Scott City led from start to finish, despite a two all tie for about 18 seconds of the game. The Beavers saw a tight game early on, but closed out the final minute of the first quarter with six straight points to lead 17-9 after the first quarter. By the break it would be 40-27 Scott City. Denver South tried making comeback after comeback attempt. When it looked like the Rebels were closing in, the Beavers made a little run of their own. Scott City had runs of 12, 10 and five in the game that were at big junctures. The largest margin was at 61-36 for the Beavers with 1:34 remaining in the third quarter. That 25-point deficit was trimmed down to nine at 83-74 with 10 seconds left. By that time, Scott City had the game well in control. Foul trouble for Denver South, coupled by the post play of Drew Kite and Joey Meyer proved to be too much for the Rebels, who suffered their first loss of the season (3-1). Scott City (1-0) was led by Kite’s 22 points, 18 coming in the first half, Brett O’Neil finished with 19, Joey Meyer had 18, and Trey O’Neil tied a career high with 13. Denver South was led by Ibrahim Sylla with a game-high 25 points, while Antonio Garcia came off the bench to score 12 points, all on three-point shots.
Day two of the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic continue Friday. Scott City hosts Dumas, Texas, while Denver South plays Garden City.
