Scott City splits with Altus
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The opening night of the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic saw a first-time matchup featuring Scott City and Altus. The Bulldogs were competing in their second straight Roundball Classic & it was the first time they played in the classic outside of Garden City. It would be a split of the doubleheader, as a last second shot by Altus would give them a 59-57 win in the girls game, while the boys game saw Scott City lead from start to finish in a 64-51 win.

Altus would make the 330-mile trip to Scott City for their Roundball Classic opener and the game would come down to the final seconds. A first quarter would see five ties and three lead changes, as the Lady Bulldogs took a 19-17 lead into the second quarter. Altus (2-2) used an 11-2 run over a four-minute stretch of the second quarter to build a 35-24 lead, but a Scott City triple pulled them to within 35-31 at the break.In the third frame, the Lady Bulldogs were able keep the Lady Beavers at arms length for most of the period. Scott City (1-1) would rally to pull to within 45-43 heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Beavers were unable to hit a field goal for nearly eight minutes of the second half, yet were not out of the game. Altus led 56-49 with 1:39 left. That’s when Scott City finally started hitting shots. After back to back triples by the Lady Beavers, the Lady Bulldogs got one of two free throws with 19.2 seconds left to lead 57-55. Scott City would come down and tie the game on a runner from Avery Lewis with eight seconds left to tie the game at 57. Altus would not let the game be played for an extra session. A three pointer was missed with about three seconds left, only to see Jenna Blackford rebound the ball and bank the shot in as time expired to give the Lady Bulldogs a 59-57 win.
Sophomore Hayden Castillo had a game-high 35 points, with 28 coming in the first half to lead Altus, while Maci Hayes added 10 points, with nine coming in the second half. They went 11-21 at the foul line and had 23 turnovers in the game. Scott City got 14 points from Megan Trout,12 points from Kendall Gentry and Avery Lewis added 11. The Lady Beavers would go 19-25 from the charity line, as they hit 14-17 free throws in the second half. They finished with 22 turnovers.
It was the second game for Scott City against a school from Oklahoma, and the first since 2016. They are 0-2 against teams from the Sooner state.

The Beavers would come out firing on all cylinders, hitting five of their first seven shots, and built a 17-2 lead over the first four-and-a-half minutes of the game. Altus settled in and pulled to within 21-9 after the first period. Scott City (2-0) would never trail, but would not be able to put away the Bulldogs. Altus banked in about a 30-foot shot to pull to wihtin 35-26 at the break. In the third quarter, the Beavers extended their lead to 46-33 with 4:50 left in the third frame, only to see the Bulldogs rally back to within eight midway through the period. Altus (0-4) used a 7-0 run over a 73-second stretch of the third and fourth quarter to get to within 51-46 within the first minute of the fourth quarter. Scott City would have the last laugh, pouring in the next 13 points over a three-minute stretch to lead 64-46 midway through the fourth quarter. Altus scored the final five points, as the Beavers were able to prevail 64-51.
Leading the charge for Scott City was Jackson Rumford with 26 points and 12 rebounds. It’s his 13th career 20-point game, and his ninth double-double of his career. Avery Radke poured in a career-best 14 points and Alex Tarango added 13. Scott City had just nine turnovers, while going 6-8 at the line. Leading Altus was Marquis Milton with 16 points and Carmile Fisher had 14 points, as they were just 4-5 at the free throw line with 11 turnovers. The Beavers won the rebounding battle 31-23.
Scott City won the first matchup with the Bulldogs, and now hold a 5-3 all-time series advantage against schools from Oklahoma.
