Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Runs have been at a premium for the Scott City Beaver baseball games through the first four games. After only scoring seven runs in those four games, and not winning a game during that stretch, the Beavers found a way to knock the run barrier down on Monday against Lakin, as they rallied for a 10-4 win in the first game of the doubleheader, and fell 6-3 in the nightcap.

Scott City 10, Lakin 4, Game 1
Finding runs and extra base hits have been an issue for the Beavers so far this season. While Scott City had only three in the first game, it for sure didn’t hinder their efforts on getting runs home. Lakin scored the games first two runs on a two-run home run by Dawson Shalberg in the top of the first inning to take the early 2-0 lead. Scott City responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning to take their first lead of the season at 3-2. The Broncs would tie the game up at three after one and half innings, and eventually retake the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Jaylyn Hash. It would be the Beavers answering back with the games final seven runs, scoring four in the fourth, as Kyle Cure and Aaron Hoopes had back to back two-run singles to push them to a 7-4 lead. Scott City tacked on a run in the fifth and added two insurance runs in the sixth to propel them to their first win of the year, and snapped a 10-game losing streak dating back to last year. Kevin Herman, who made his debut on the mound, picked up the win, going 3 2/3 innings, scattering four hits and striking out three. Justin Faurot started the game, and went 1 1/3 innings and Hoopes went two innings of relief. Cure and Hoopes had two hits and drove in two runs apiece, while Drew Duff drove in a pair of runs. Scott City outhit the Broncs 8-7, and left 10 runners on base, compared to five for Lakin. For the Broncs, Colby Gugelmeyer took the loss in relief, going 1 1/3 innings, surrendering five runs on three hits. He also had three hits and a run scored.

Lakin 6, Scott City 3, Game 2
Lakin took advantage of getting the leadoff batter reaching base in three of the four innings that occured. The Broncs scored one run in the first, three in the second and two more in the fourth to lead 6-0 halfway through the second game. In the second inning, Lakin took advantage of four walks, as three of them scored. Scott City had their chances to score early on, but left runners in scoring position in four of seven innings. The Beavers left 10 runners on base total, compared to four for the Broncs. Khai Hernandez drove in three of Lakin’s six runs in the second and fourth innings, with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, and a two-run single in the fourth inning, that propelled the Broncs to the end of their three-game losing streak. In the fifth inning, Scott City took advantage of the bases being loaded, as Alex Depperschmidt was hit by a pitch that scored the Beavers first run to pull them to within 6-1. In the sixth inning, it was Justin Faurot that singled in a pair of runs to bring them to within 6-3. Scott City was able to get two runners on in the seventh, but could not bring them home. Hunter Kirby went four scoreless innings for Lakin, and scattered two hits with two strikeouts. Dawsen Shalberg went the final three innings to pick up the win, allowing three runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Diego Davilla had two hits and two runs scored for the Broncs. Todd Morris took the loss, going one-plus innings, surrendering two runs on two hits with two strikeouts. The Beavers used six pitchers in the second game, and nine total on the day. Justin Faurot had two of the five hits for Scott City.

Lakin is 5-3 on the season, as they will play at Sublette on Thursday, while Scott City is 1-5 on the year, and will travel to Syracuse Tuesday and host Satanta on Friday.
