Scott City Splits Doubleheader with Lakin
Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing for the first time since their mid-season tournaments from this past weekend, the Lakin Broncs and the Scott City Beavers kicked off their second portion of the seasons with a split. The Lady Broncs rallied from a four-point deficit heading into the final quarter to win 55-51, while the Beaver boys led from start to finish in a 74-40 thumping.
Lakin was able to build a 14-point lead late in the first half, thanks to six three-pointers converted. Their shooting from behind the arc propelled them to a 31-21 halftime lead. The first half early on saw two ties and three lead changes. In the second half, Scott City played one of their best, if not, their best quarter of basketball all season. They outscored the Broncs 22-6, and took a 41-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, Lakin started off on a 7-0 run, and never relinquished the lead. The Lady Beavers did fight to with a point on two occasions, with the last being 52-51. Scott City had an opportunity to regain the lead with under a minute remaining, but a turnover proved to be costly, and the Lady Broncs went on to score the final five points of the game. Leading the way for Lakin (7-5) was Mariah Watkins with 13 points, Darrie Rogers finished with 12 and Karlee Davidson added 10. Scott City (1-10) was once again paced by Janessa Lowenthal with a game-high 15 points, while Bailey Nickel added 13.
The finale of the evening was dominated by the Beaver blue from start to finish, racing out to a 19-9 lead after one quarter, and a 40-19 lead at the break. Scott City used runs of nine, eight, 13, five, and 10 in the game. Lakin’s biggest run was five. It was an opportunity for the Beavers to use a little more depth in their bench, as they were well on their way to win number 10 on the season. Scott City head coach Glenn O’Neil hit a milestone Tuesday night, winning his 450th career game, 291 of those coming at Scott City in 17 seasons. The Beavers (10-1) finished with four players in double-figures, led by Drew Kite’s 18 points, Joey Meyer with 16, Anthony Wilson’s 12 points on four three-pointers, and Tyler Hess pitched in 11. Lakin (2-10) did not have anyone score double figures, but were led by Daylan Gilliland with eight points off the bench.
Scott City returns home Friday night to face the Liberal Redskins, while Lakin will make an eight-mile drive to face rival Deerfield in the Kearny County Shootout.
