Scott City Splits Doubleheader With Hugoton
Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a cold and blustery night in Hugoton, the Eagles and Beavers split a Great West Activities Conference doubleheader Tuesday night, as the Hugoton girls win 62-36, while the Scott City boys prevailed 66-28.
Down leading scorer and rebounder Janessa Lowenthal due to sickness, the Lady Beavers struggled from the beginning, giving up 13 of the first 15 points. The second strike would see Kelly Wycoff picking three fouls in the first 3:33 of the ballgame, forcing her to sit on the bench for the remainder of the first half. After Scott City cut the lead to 15-7 with just under three minutes remaining in the first period, the Lady Eagles went on a 22-2 run, and took a 43-19 lead at the break. In the second half, the Lady Beavers would actually outscore Hugoton by one point, but the deficit was too much to overcome, as the Lady Eagles would win all three matchups this season. Hugoton (10-4, 4-2 GWAC) had three players in double figures, led by Nicole Kinser with a game-high 16 points, while Ana Pena scored 14 off the bench, and Chastity Parsons and Riley Sosa finished with 12 points each. Scott City (2-11, 1-4 GWAC) was led by Shanaya Hoeme’s 14 points and Bailey Nickel’s 11.
In the final game of the night, the top team in Class 3A would get off to a good start and never look back. The Beavers raced out to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter, and put up an impressive 33 points in the second quarter to jump out to a 53-14 lead at the break. In the first half, Scott City used runs 12-0, 11-0, and 12-0 in the first half. From late in the first half to early into the third quarter, the Beavers had another 12-0 run, and took a 66-18 lead after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Eagles scored 10 straight points, as a running clock was used in the entire second half. Scott City (12-1, 5-0 GWAC) was led by Drew Kite’s 18 points, and Anthony Wilson chipped in 10 off the bench. Hugoton (3-10, 1-5) was paced by Henry Vela’s eight points.
Scott City will continue their two-game road swing on Friday to Ulysses to face the Tigers, while Hugoton will host Colby in the battle of the Eagles.
