Scott City splits doubleheader with Hoisington

Playing in their first home games since March 30, the Scott City Beavers saw a familiar trend at home Friday against Hoisington: splitting a doubleheader. Unlike their first two home dates, the Beavers lost the first game 7-3, but bounced back to win in walk-off fashion in the finale of the day 5-4. Scott City scored first in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out single by Devyn Eggleston that drove in Matt Zilla. The Cardinals would respond with a run of their own in the second to tie the game. It would remain a one-all tie through four innings, and that’s when Hoisington took the lead for good. They scored twice on a pair of hits. Scott City responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame on a Tyler Hess double, scoring Zilla to make it 3-2 Cards, but that would be the closest the Beavers would get the rest of the way. Hoisington scored four runs in the sixth to open the game up, and Scott City scored in the seventh on a double by Jeremy Clinton scoring Zilla again. Drew Kite took the loss, giving up seven runs, six earned on 11 hits and struck out three, while walking three. Six different players had one hit each for the Beavers.

Game two saw Hoisington pick up from where they left off in the first game, as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning, despite having the bases loaded. Scott City got one run back on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Hess, scoring Matt Zilla from third to trail 2-1 after the opening frame. The Cardinals added two runs in the third inning, and led 4-1 through four innings. In the fifth, the Beavers started their comeback. Austin Habiger hit a one-out double scoring Drew Kite and Devyn Eggleston, but was tagged out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple. In the sixth, Scott City would tie the game up at four on a Kite single scoring Zilla. In the seventh, the first two batters were retired for the Beavers, and that’s where things started going the home team’s way. Sloan Baker and Brett Meyer walked to set up the final at bat of the game. Zilla hit a two-two pitch into left center field, scoring Baker from second to give the Beavers their first walk-off win of the season. Out of Scott City’s eight hits, five came from Habiger and Chris Pounds, who were the sixth and seventh batters in the lineup. Kite had two hits as well. Despite hitting six batters in the game, Tyler Hess got the win, as he went the distance, giving up two earned runs on six hits and struck out five. After Friday, Scott City is now 7-5 on the season, and Hoisington is 5-7. The Beavers will face a solid Lakin Bronc team Thursday in Lakin in a makeup game from April 3.
