Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Saturday’s doubleheader between Goodland and Scott City matched up a pair of teams that looked to take some momentum into the final month of the regular season. It would end up being a doubleheader split as the Goodland Cowgirls never trailed in a 57-37 victory, while the Beaver boys rallied for a 54-43 victory. The games were originally scheduled for January 5, but due to the extended moratorium this year, they were moved to this date.

The No. 8 ranked team entered Scott City on a tear from the previous night, as they dominated Lakin 52-20. It would be the Cowgirls who would continue their defensive domination early on. Goodland would lead 8-7 after the first period of play. Scott City had their chances to lead late in the first and early second quarters, but were unable to get over the hump. The game would change in favor of the Cowgirls with 6:46 left in the second quarter on a Talexa Weeter four-point play, that sparked a 19-0 run in the second period, which gave Goodland a 27-7 halftime edge. The Cowgirls held Scott City scoreless in the second period, and ended up with a 21-0 run, before the Lady Beavers scored early in the third quarter. A 9-2 Goodland run pushed their lead to the largest of the night at 38-11 with six minutes left in the third frame. Scott City battle back and would close the final five minutes of the period on a 7-4 run and get to 42-20 heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Beavers would outscored the Cowgirls 17-15 in the final eight minutes of play to make the score 57-37 in favor of Goodland.

This game would be tightly contested for the first three quarters, only to see the Beavers explode in the fourth quarter. Goodland and Scott City were tied three times in the first three quarters, despite the Cowboys never trailing in the game. To begin the game, Goodland would jump out early with a pair of threes to lead 6-0 three minutes into the game, only to see the Beavers respond with an 8-2 run over the final four minutes of the first period to tie the game at eight after a quarter of play. Goodland would jump out to a five point lead early in the second quarter at 13-8, and extended their lead to 24-15 with 2:31 left in the first half. However, Scott City responded by hitting three consecutive three’s to tie the game with under a minute left in the half at 24. The Beavers would have their chances to take the lead late in the second and early in the third, but were unable to. After the Cowboys lead 33-27 with five minutes left in the third quarter, the Scott City defense would slowly take over, which led to their offense. An 8-5 run to close the third pulled the Beavers to within 38-35 heading into the fourth frame. It wasn’t until Josh Rosin’s layup with 6:56 left that gave Scott City their first lead at 39-38, as they would turn it on in the final quarter. The Beavers outscored Goodland 19-5 in the final eight minutes to pick up their third win of the season in a 54-43 win.

Three players were in double figures, led by Blaine Culp and Carter Gooden with 12 points apiece, as Gooden had a career high in points and had nine rebounds. Gus Hawkins had 10 points and nine rebounds for Scott City, who went 6-10 at the foul line. Goodland was led by Brennan Brumbaugh with nine points and Cole Linton added eight. Goodland went 0-5 at the free throw line. Scott City had nine players score in the game.

With the win, the Beavers not only picked up their first home win of the year, but also improved their series lead against Goodland since 1979 to 38-29. It was season-high of points for Scott City, eclipsing their 47 set on Tuesday against Hugoton.
