Scott City splits doubleheader with Colby

Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a return to GWAC play on Friday, the Scott City Beavers made the trek to Colby to face the Eagles. Both boys and girls teams for Scott City were looking for their first league wins early on in league competition. At the end, it would be a split, as the Lady Beavers suffered yet another close loss in a 36-31 setback, while the Beaver boys put together one of their best outings of the year in a 74-38 thumping of the Eagles.

Coming in, both Colby and Scott City had one win each. The game played out to be a well-contested game in the end. With five lead changes and two ties, no one had a bigger lead than 10. The Lady Eagles led 12-7 after the first quarter. Scott City (1-5, 0-2 GWAC) had a quick start to the game, but had one of their tough stretches without any points in the late part of the first quarter and into the second period. They went without a point in 7:34. However, Colby would not stretch their lead much in that time frame. Colby’s biggest run in the first half would end up a 6-0 run to give them their biggest lead at 19-9 with 2:13 left before the break. The Lady Beavers trailed by eight at intermission, but scored the first eight points of the second half to tie the game at 19 with 3:56 left in the third frame. They also held the Lady Eagles without a point for a stretch of 7:11. In the third quarter, Scott City’s run would be 13-2, as they took a 24-21 lead going into the final period. Colby (2-5, 2-1) started out with the first six points of the fourth quarter, and never surrendered the lead. The Lady Eagles led by no more than five points in the final period, and the Lady Beavers couldn’t get any closer than one early on in the fourth quarter, as they dropped another close game. Brenly Terrell scored a game-high 18 points for Colby, as she scored all her points in the first and fourth quarters. Scott City got nine points from Kiana Yager. The Lady Beavers committed 29 turnovers, but outrebounded the Lady Eagles 40-37.

After Colby led 4-0 two minutes into the game, it was pretty much all Scott City after that. The Beavers showed probably the most consistency all season, suing runs of eight and 10 to build a 23-12 lead after the first quarter. Colby (0-7, 0-3 GWAC) with without a point in a 6:56 stretch of the first half. During that span, Scott City went from having a one point lead to a 16 point advantage at 28-12 with 6:21 remaining in the half. When it was said and done, the Beavers went on a 24-2 run in an eight minute stretch, and led by as many as 22 points in the first half, while taking a 43-24 halftime lead. The Eagles scored the first two points of the third quarter, and Scott City (4-2, 1-1) went on another big run. They used a 19-0 run to put the dagger into the Eagles, and eventually took a 64-29 lead going into the final quarter. The final eight minutes of play saw a continuous clock due to the 30-plus point margin, as the Beavers outscored Colby 10-9 in the final frame. Scott City got two career highs in the win, as Bo Hess poured in 26 points, while Drew Duff added 18. Colby was led by Jordan Schippers with 16 points, as the Eagles have dropped 37 consecutive games. Scott City has won 13 straight over Colby.
