Scott City splits doubleheader with Pine Creek in Orange & Black opener

Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On the opening day of the 30th Annual Paul Wintz/Tom Bowen Orange & Black Classic in Colby, Scott City faced two teams that they have never faced in the Pine Creek Eagles from Colorado Springs. After the first two games in the Colby High School gym were completed, the Beaver boys pulled away to win 69-48, while the Lady Eagles started out in a hurry and never looked back to win 66-19.

In the first game of the day, Scott City started out with a 13-2 run after being tied early on at five. They led 20-12 after the first quarter, and saw Pine Creek (6-8) pull to within four in the first half. Just like the first quarter, the Beavers would build up their lead, leading by as many as 13 in the first half, and took a 40-29 intermission lead. The Eagles would pull to within 43-36 two minutes into the second half, before Scott City (8-1) made a run. It ended up being an 8-3 run to end the third period to take a 53-41 lead into the final quarter. The Beavers scored eight of the first 10 points, as they pulled away en route to a 21-point win, and their ninth straight Orange & Black victory, dating back to 2010. Leading the way for Scott City was Trey O’Neil with 26 points, 17 coming in the first half, followed by Sloan Baker with 13 and Chantz Yager with 10. Pine Creek got 20 points from sophomores Quinten Gutierrez and 16 from Jeremiah Pruitt.

The girls game turned out to be a mismatch, as Pine Creek wasted little time putting the game away. Pine Creek (9-5) scored the games first 19 points in the first five-plus minutes. In fact, Scott City (2-7) did not attempt their first shot until the two-minute mark of the first quarter. The Lady Beavers ended up scoring the games final three points of the quarter to trail 19-3 after the opening eight minutes. All of Scott City’s points in the second frame were from the foul line, as the Lady Eagles extended their lead to 37-8 at the break. In the second half, Pine Creek had runs of 10-0 and 9-0, led by as many as 48 points, before winning by 47 points. The Lady Beavers were only able to hit four field goals the entire game, as 10 of their points came from the foul line. Pine Creek got 16 points from Spencer Lindsey, and 11 by Emma List. Kiana Yager was the high scorer for the Lady Beavers with six.

Friday’s schedule will see the Lady Beavers face Fort Lupton, CO at 3 pm at Colby High School in a consolation semi-final game, while the boys will play Kansas City-Schagle at 4:45 at the Colby Community Building in the championship semi-finals.
