Scott City splits doubleheader with Holcomb
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two teams who have had opposite kind of seasons met up Friday in Scott City, as they Beavers played in their league opener against the Holcomb Longhorns on a beautiful afternoon of softball. The day would end up seeing a split, as Scott City won their first game of the season in game one 13-12, and the Lady Longhorns claimed a 16-0 shutout in four innings in game two.
It looked as though it would be deja vu all over again for the Lady Beavers in the first game. Holcomb scored the games first seven runs, including five in the second to lead 7-0 going into the bottom of the frame. Scott City responded with their best inning of the year, sending 12 batters to the plate, and scoring eight runs to lead 8-7 after the second. The score would remain the same over the next two innings, when the Lady Beavers strung together three singles in the fifth inning, scoring two to take a 10-7 lead, as Madison Orr and Sierra Rose drove in a run each. In the top of the sixth, Holcomb would respond by scoring four runs to take an 11-10 lead, as the top four in the batting order scored. Scott City fought back and took the lead in the bottom of the inning, with four singles and three runs to retake the lead 13-11, and only gave up a run to the Lady Longhorns in the seventh inning to claim their first win of the season, and their first win over Holcomb in three seasons. Bre Smull got the win, giving up 12 runs, seven earned, on 12 hits in seven innings to get the win. She also contributed with three hits and two RBI in the first game. Rose also drove in a pair of runs for Scott City. Hayley Walck had three hits and April Santoyo scored four runs for the Lady Longorns in the loss. Kenzie Roth took the loss, giving up 13 runs on nine hits.
It was all Holcomb in game two, scoring in three of the four innings played in the 16-0 thumping of the Lady Beavers. The Lady Longhorns scored four runs in the first, and plated nine in the third, while adding three in the fourth inning. Scott City had their chances to score in the game, leaving seven runners on the bases, including the bases loaded in the second inning. Kenzie Roth scattered four hits for Holcomb to pick up the shutout victory. Ashley Mongeau, Molly Harrington and Kelsey Wilkerson collected two hits each for the Lady Longhorns. Bre Smull took the loss for the Lady Beavers, giving up 11 runs, five earned, on seven hits in two-plus innings of pitching, and took the loss. Smull, Sierra Rose, Cassidy Hornbostel and Macy Davis collected a hit each for Scott City.
After the day, Holcomb improved to 8-4 overall, 4-4 in GWAC play, while Scott City is 1-7 overall, 1-1 in GWAC Play. Next up for the Lady Longhorns is at Goodland on Thursday, while Scott City visits Lakin Tuesday.
