Scott City softball wins GWAC title with a sweep of Holcomb

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The rivalry of Scott City and Holcomb softball was delayed by nearly three weeks, because of bad weather that day. For the Lady Beavers, it was worth the wait. Thursday’s doubleheader between Holcomb and Scott City set up a winner take all scenario for the GWAC crown. The Lady Beavers entered 6-2 in league play, while Holcomb was 5-3. After the day was over, it would be Scott City completing the sweep, and winning the GWAC title, with a pair of wins 8-0 and 10-9 in Scott City. For the Lady Beavers, it was their first-ever GWAC title.

Game one saw Scott City score in just two innings. The big rally came in the bottom of the first with six runs, and they added two more in the third, as they coasted to the win. Kaitlyn Roberts struck out seven over seven innings to pick up the win, scattering three hits, while Sydney Faulcenor took the loss, giving up eight runs, six earned on 12 hits in six innings of work for Holcomb.

In game two, the Lady Longhorns jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a half inning, and led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the second. That would be their last lead. Scott City scored five in the second, and added three in the third to go up 9-6. They scored an additional run in the fourth to lead 10-7. Holcomb scored a run in the third through sixth innings to pull to within 10-9, but were held scoreless in the seventh. Lyndi Rumford got the win, and Kaitlyn Roberts picked up the save. Sydney Faulcenor took the loss, going all six innings. The Lady Beavers outhit the Lady Longhorns 12-5 in game two.

Scott City is now 15-3 on the year, and finished 8-2 in GWAC play. They will have a bye as the top seed in the Goodland regional and will face the Colby/Goodland winner on Tuesday at 3 pm. Holcomb 15-5 on the year, and finished 5-5 in conference play. Colby, Hugoton and Ulysses were also 5-5 in league play. The Lady Longhorns are the top seed in the Hugoton regional, and face 13-7 Pratt at 2 pm on Monday.
