Scott City softball splits with Liberal
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Nearly three weeks later, Scott City and Liberal were able to do battle Monday afternoon in Scott City. Originally scheduled for April 6, the first postponed doubleheader of the year for the Lady Beavers was made up. The Lady Redskins came in with a six-game losing streak, while Scott City entered the season at 6-0. In the end, both teams came away with a win. Scott City won the first game 8-4, while Liberal held on in the finale with an 11-9 win.
Scott City 8, Liberal 4, Game 1
Scott City returned to the field for the first time in a week, and were challenged for the first time this year. After taking a 1-0 lead into the third inning, Liberal responded with a four-run inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Lady Redskins took advantage of two errors and had four hits in the inning. In the bottom of the half, the Lady Beavers responded to tie the game, when Gabby Martinez connected on a two-run single to tie the game at four. In the fourth inning, the Scott City took the lead for good on a Bailey Latta single that scored Kaitlyn Wolkensdorfer to make it 5-4. Wolkensdorfer would drive in two more in the fifth inning to make it 7-4 and the Lady Beavers added another run in the inning to make it 8-4. Both teams finished with eight hits. Kaitlyn Roberts had three hits and scored three times, while Gabby Martinez had two hits and two RBI, and Kaitlyn Wolkensdorfer drove in two runs. Roberts got the win, giving up four runs, two earned on eight hits. Whitney Hay had four hits for Liberal, and drove in two of their runs. Kaeleah Chaloupek took the loss, giving up eight runs, four earned, on eight hits and struck out six.
Liberal 11, Scott City 9, Game 2
After a scoreless first inning, Liberal exploded with a seven-run second inning, and never trailed. The Lady Redskins took advantage of four walks and two hit batters and sent 13 to bat in the inning on just three hits. Scott City was only able to pick up a run in the second, third and fourth innings. Liberal led 10-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth, when the Lady Beavers scored a run, than the bottom of the fifth saw hope from Scott City. It started with the bunt single from Bailey Latta, and three batters later, a three-run double by Gabby Martinez pulled them to within 10-6. Aspen Nix would drive in Martinez, and then an error allowed two more runs to score to make it 10-9. That would be the last from Scott City. The Lady Redskins would add a run in the sixth inning after a leadoff double and Kaeleah Chaloupek scored on a Mikayla Zapien RBI ground out to make it 11-9. Scott City was unable to get going in the last two innings, suffering their first loss of the season. Chaloupek picked up the win for Liberal, lasting all seven innings, giving up nine runs, five earned, on eight hits, with seven strikeouts. Alexia Torres had three hits and drove in three runs, while Nohemi Gomez drove in three runs as well. Lyndi Rumford gave up seven runs, five earned in two innings pitched to take the loss. Kaitlyn Roberts pitched the final five innings, giving up four runs, two earned on seven hits. Bailey Latta had two of Scott City’s eight hits, while Gabby Martinez had three RBI and Kaitlyn Wolkensdorfer added two RBI.
Scott City is 7-1 on the year, and will play at Lakin on Tuesday, before hosting Colby on Friday. Liberal snapped a seven-game slide with the second game win, and are 6-8 on the year, and will host Elkhart on Friday.
