Scott City softball splits with Hugoton

Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Fridays doubleheader with Scott City and Hugoton featured a pair of teams that not only had league title implications on the line, but regional seedings. In the end, it would be a doubleheader split, as the Lady Eagles would walk-off in the first game 4-3, and the Lady Beavers would take the finale 12-1 in five innings.

In the first inning, Scott City scored a run in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the third. Hugoton responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at two. It would remain tied at two until the bottom of the sixth, when the Lady Eagles scored to take a 3-2 lead. The Lady Beavers tied it up in the top of the seventh at two, only to see Hugoton score the winning run with two outs to win in walk-off fashion 4-3. Scott City cranked out 13 hits in the game, led by Kaitlyn Roberts and Macie Price each with four hits. They also drove in one run, as did Gabby Martinez. Roberts took the loss, giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts.

It was all Scott City in the second inning, as they scored in every inning. The Lady Beavers scored a pair of runs in the first two innings, opened the game up with a six-run third inning, and added a run in the fourth and fifth innig. Hugoton’s lone run was in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 12-1. The game ended after five innings, due to the 10-run rule. Macie Price was 3-4 with four RBI, while Bailey Latta was 4-4 with two RBI, and Aspyn Nix went 3-4 with two runs driven in. Kally Kough also had two RBI in the win. Scott City finished with 15 hits in the game. Lyndi Rumford got the win, going all five innings, giving up a run on five hits with four strikeouts, and overcame eight walks.

After Friday, Scott City is now 13-3 overall, 6-2 in GWAC play. They clinched the overall top seed and a first round by in the Goodland Regional, that starts May 14. Hugoton is now 14-4 on the season, and 5-3 in league play. They remain toward the top of the Hugoton Regional. Scott City wraps up the regular season on Thursday at home against Holcomb, while Hugoton plays at Ulysses on Tuesday to close out the regular season. Holcomb and Hugoton are tied for second in the GWAC with 5-3 records, one game behind Scott City in the standings.
