Scott City softball splits with Goodland

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City knew they would have a battle on their hands on Tuesday afternoon against the Goodland Cowgirls. Yes, the Cowgirls came in with a 4-6 record. Their losses came to Colby, Garden City and Russell/Victoria. While the Lady Beaver offense was shut down in the first game, they found a way to salvage a split in the second game on a windy day. They would lose the first game 3-0, but bounce back for a 6-3 win in the second game.

Scott City would end up outhitting the Cowgirls, but would miss on several scoring opportunities. After both teams were retired in order in the first inning, the Lady Beavers had the first threat in the game, but could not drive in the runs from second and third in the second inning. The game would remain scoreless through five innings. In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, Goodland would come up with the clutch performance. Jaxi Mitchek would drive in Sara Syverson to make it 1-0. Anna Gutierrez would score on an errant throw on a pickoff attempt at third to go up 2-0, and Mitchek scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 3-0. Scott City had their opportunities with two outs, as they got a hit, and a walk, but would pop out in foul territory to end the game, and would end up getting shut out 3-0.

Jaxi Mitchek and Sara Sylverson had two hits each for the Cowgirls, which were their lone hits of the game. Anna Gutierrez, scattered six hits and struck out three in seven scoreless innings for the win, and threw 83 pitches. Malorie Cupp had a two-hit game in the loss, as the Lady Beavers ended up with six hits. Cheyenne Cramer had 14 strikeouts, and gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits and one walk in six innings in the circle.

The finale of the day would go back and forth throughout the middle innings. Scott City scored the first runs, as Tori Ford had an RBI groundout scoring Amber Latta to make it 1-0 in the top of the first, and in the top of the second, Melanie Duff drove in Rhiley Stoppel on a line drive that went off the tip of the pitcher’s glove and dropped in the infield to make it 2-0. Goodland would storm back in the third to take the lead. The pulled to within 2-1 on a Makayla Wolak fielder’s choice that scored Atalee Amthor, who barely slid under the tag at home. An RBI walk tied the game, as Eve Cole walked, scoring Anna Gutierrez, and the Cowgirls would take the lead in the third on an error that scored Wolak. The Lady Beavers would tie the game up in the top of the fourth on a pair of Goodland errors on the same play, that scored Madison Miller to tie the game at three. They would take the lead for good in the fifth inning when Malorie Cupp grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Cheyenne Cramer to put them up 4-3. The score remained a one-run game until the top of the seventh, when Madison Miller hit a clutch RBI single scoring Stoppel. Scott City pushed their lead to 6-3 when Duff reached on an error, and Madison Miller scored. Goodland would be retired eight straight times over the final three innings, led by the double play by Makayla Miller in the top of the fifth inning.

Rhiley Stoppel had two hits in the game, while Ford, Cupp, Madison Miller and Melanie Duff drove in a run apiece, as Scott City outhit the Cowgirls 6-2. Goodland had six errors in game two, while the Lady Beavers had three. Cheyenne Cramer got the win in relief, giving up a hit and two runs, one earned in five innings pitched, and struck out eight. Hannah Tucker went two-plus innings, giving up a run on a hit with two strikeouts. Anna Gutierrez would take the loss for Goodland, as she entered the game in the circle in the fourth, giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits. Jaxi Mitchek gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits and three strikeouts in three innings of work. Gutierrez also had both hits for the Cowgirls in game two.

Scott City is now 12-2 overall, 6-2 in GWAC play, as they will head to Cimarron for a GWAC doubleheader on Friday. Goodland is 5-7 overall, 5-3 in league, play, as they’ll host TMP Marian on Friday afternoon.
