Scott City softball splits with Southwestern Heights
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Going into Tuesday’s doubleheader, Scott City and Southwestern Heights came in with .500 records. After Tuesday’s games, both teams also leave with .500 records, as the Lady Mustangs rally in the seventh to take the first game 13-10, while the Lady Beavers win the finale of the day 14-3 in five innings.
Game one saw both teams commit their share of mistakes. Both teams committed nine errors and saw the lead exchanged five times. Scott City took a 2-1 lead after the first inning, only to see Southwestern Heights add a run in the second and third innings to lead 3-2. The Lady Mustangs would put up four runs in the fourth to build a 7-2 lead, and it looked like they were well on their way to a win. A three-run fourth and a two-run fifth got the Lady Beavers evened up at seven going into the sixth inning. After Southwestern Heights retook the lead at 8-7, Scott City scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead at 10-8 their first since the first. The Lady Mustangs would take advantage of costly mistakes by the Lady Beavers, and rallied for five runs on three hits to take a 13-10 lead. Southwestern Heights would shut down the Lady Beavers to get the game one win. Sara Eakes went all seven innings in the circle to pick up the win, allowing 10 runs on six hits and struck out five. Bre Smull took the loss, going six-plus innings, surrendering 11 runs on eight hits. Eakes also helped her cause with three hits, and three runs driven in, and was a home run away from the cycle.
The finale of the day saw Southwestern Heights pick up from where they left off. They scored two runs in the top of the first innings, and Scott City cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning. Southwestern Heights would take a 3-1 lead after an inning and a half. That’s when the Lady Beavers took over. They would send eight to the plate in the second and third innings, scoring five runs in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth to lead 14-3. Scott City sent 10 to bat in that fourth inning, and would work around a one out single in the fifth inning to salvage a split. Kaitlyn Robers picked up the win giving up three runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Nicole Latta and Jordan Miller had two hits and drove in three runs for Scott City. Aspen Bensik took the loss, giving up eight runs on three hits in two-plus innings pitched.
Scott City is now 3-3 and will play a doubleheader at Holcomb on Friday, while Southwestern Heights is 4-4, and hosts Satanta on Friday.
