Scott City softball splits at Ulysses

Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in their first of three doubleheaders this week, the Scott City softball team took to the road to Ulysses on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader. The day would end up in a split, as the Lady Beavers took the first game 7-2, while the Lady Tigers took the finale in a shootout 17-12.

In the first game, both teams scored a run in the third to see a tied game at one after three innings. Scott City scored a run in the fourth to lead 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when Ulysses tied the game at two. The Lady Beavers would take control of the game in the seventh, when they scored five runs to take the game 7-2. In the top of the inning, Macie Price would hit a three-run home run to propel Scott City to the win. Bailey Latta added two hits and drove in two runs, while Kaitlyn Wolkensdorfer had two hits and an RBI. The Lady Beavers had 11 hits in the game. Kaitlyn Roberts picked up the win, giving up two runs on his hits on just 93 pitches.

Errors doomed Scott City in the second inning, as Ulysses took full advantage of them. The Lady Beavers would finish with six errors in the game. It would be 2-1 Ulysses after the first. After Scott City got a Kaitlyn Roberts grand slam in the second to take a 5-2 lead, the Lady Tigers put up six in the bottom half of the frame to take an 8-5 lead. The Lady Beavers tied the game at 8 after 8 innings. In the fourth, Ulysses would score six runs to take the lead for good, and add six in the bottom of the sixth inning. Scott City scored a run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in their last at bat to fall 17-12. In the loss, the Lady Beavers cranked out 16 hits in the game. Roberts had three hits and drove in five runs, with four on the grand slam. Bailey Latta also had three hits and drove in two, and Macie Price added three hits and had an RBI. Lyndi Rumford took the loss, giving up 11 runs, only five earned, on nine hits in three-plus innings of work.

After Tuesday, Scott City is 10-2 overall, 5-1 in GWAC play. They’ll continue their southwest Kansas tour on Thursday at Stanton County and Friday at Hugoton. Ulysses is now 7-9 overall, 3-5 in GWAC play. They will be at Elkhart on Thursday, before hosting Hugoton on Tuesday.
