Scott City Softball opener spoiled by Cardinals
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–After having their first two doubleheaders postponed, the Scott City Lady Beavers finally were able to take the field, as they hosted the Hoisington Cardinals Tuesday in Scott City. The Cardinals used 10-run innings in the first and second games to end the games early, with a 15-0 win in four innings and 18-3 thrashing in the second game in three innings.
In the first game, Hoisington scored five runs on five hits in the first two innings. Scott City was shut out in the first inning, and tried to keep themselves a part of the game. The Lady Beavers left two runners on the bases in the second, third and fourth innings, four of those in scoring position. The top of the fourth was all Lady Cardinals, as Tana Hickel hit a two-run home run and a grand slam in the same inning, driving in four of their 10 runs to help push them to a 15-0 win. Scott City played error-free ball in the first three innings, and had four in the fourth inning, three of them coming with two outs. Karissa Schremer gave up three hits and struck out seven for Hoisington in the first game. Bre Smull took the loss, going three innings, and surrendered five runs on six hits and struck out two. Cassidy Hornbostel, Smull and Madison Orr each had a hit for the Lady Beavers.
Game two saw the Lady Cardinals pick up from where they left off in the first game. They scored seven runs in the top half of the first inning. Scott City was only able to plate one across in the bottom half of the inning. The second inning would turn the tides all the way into the Lady Cardinals favor, Hoisington would send 14 to bat, and score 10 runs on seven hits to open the game up to a 17-1 lead. The Lady Beavers had chances once again to chip into the lead, but left the bases loaded in the bottom of the second with only one out. Hoisington added a run in the third, and Scott City scored two runs on a pair of sacrifice hits, and left the game-continuing run on at third base. Cassidy Hornbostel took the loss for the Lady Beavers, going only 1/3 of an inning. Krissa Dearden had two of Scott City’s four hits in the game. Going all three innings and getting the win was Delaney Smith. Tana Hickel drove in four runs in the second game, including a three-run home run, her third home run of the day.
Hoisington improved to 4-0 with their doubleheader sweeps, while Scott City drops to 0-2. The Lady Beavers will have a week off before traveling to Southwestern Heights next Tuesday. Their doubleheader from Monday with Liberal was canceled and will not be made up.
