Scott City shuts out Ulysses
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–While Scott City cashed in on a fumble in the first minute of the game, it looked as if the Beavers and Ulysses were in for a battle. While there were three-and-outs by both teams and plenty of penalties in the early going, a couple big plays by Scott City used a big second quarter to shut out the Tigers 47-0 at Darner Field.
Two plays after a Ulysses fumble in the first minute, Wyatt Hayes would go around the left side for a 13-yard touchdown with 11:12 remaining in the first quarter to go up 7-0 after the Moses Hinojos PAT. Hayes went over the 3,000-yard rushing mark on the touchdown. Both teams would be sluggish, committing penalties and be forced to punt. It would not be until 26.8 seconds left in the first quarter that the Beavers would score again. Following a Tiger penalty, Parker Vulgamore scored from 10 yards out on his 18th birthday to pus the Beaver lead to 14-0 with the Hinojos extra point.
Scott City would keep the petal to the medal in the second quarter, scoring 33 points. The first came on a one-yard rush by Hayes with 8:08 left in the half to extend to lead to 20-o, as the extra point was missed. On their next drive, a three-play drive was capped off on a five-yard run by Brandon Winderlin with 5:55 left in the half to go up 26-0 after the missed extra point.
Wyatt Hayes would find the end zone in a different way for his third score of the night. Hayes took the Ulysses punt, and ran it back for a 79-yard touchdown with 3:18 left in the half to go up 33-0 with the Hinojos PAT. After a quick three-and-0ut and a short field, Hayes punched it in from two yards out with 1:39 to go before halftime extend the lead to 40-0 with the Hinojos extra point. Scott City would add one more score before halftime, taking advantage of a Tiger interception. Marshall Faurot, who picked off Ulysses at midfield, hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass from Parker Gooden with 12.3 seconds left, and Hinojos’ extra point made the score 47-0.
While there was no scoring with a continuous clock in the second half, it would be the Tigers who had the biggest threat. Ulysses would get to the Beaver four yard line, the closest Scott City had allowed an opponent to score this yea. The Beaver defense would hold the Tigers on downs.
Parker Gooden finished 6-10 passing for 123 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Marshall Faurot led the way on two receptions for 45 yards with a touchdown. Wyatt Hayes finished with 91 yards on 16 carries with three rushing touchdowns. The Beavers finished with 134 passing yards and 173 yards for a total of 307 yards.
Ulysses saw Devin Walker go 6-16 passing for 69 yards with an interception. Sloan Hayden was the leading receiver with 39 yards on three receptions. Andrew Nagel had 34 yards on 10 carries on the ground. The Tigers finished with 69 passing yards and had 43 yards rushing for a total of 112 yards. It was the first time that Scott City allowed over 100 yards to an opponent all year.
Both teams finished with two turnovers.
With the win, Scott City hasn’t allowed a point through the first four games for the first time since 1984, and it’s their fifth straight win over Ulysses, and the 10th time they’ve defeated the Tigers in the last 11 games.
Marshall Faurot was crowned Homecoming King, while Kodi Rogers was crowned Homecoming Queen.
Scott City is 4-0, and will return to district play, hosting Russell. The Broncos are 2-2 on the year after a 42-20 loss at Concordia. Ulysses is 2-2, and will play their final home game of the year against Pittsburg next Saturday afternoon. The Purple Dragons are 4-0 on the year, after a 17-14 win over rival Fort Scott.
