Scott City shuts out Lakin
Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City didn’t waste much time taking care of business Friday night in Lakin. In a game they were heavily favored, the Beavers showed why they are one of the best in the state, scoring on their first seven possessions while not allowing a first down, en route to a 55-0 shutout win over the Broncs that spoiled Lakin’s Senior Night.
The Beavers scored 35 first quarter points, and took advantage of two Bronc turnovers. Cooper Griffith had three touchdown runs, with his first coming at the 9:45 mark of the first period. He also scored on a 47-yard run five minutes later and an eight-yard run with 24 seconds left in the first quarter. Also in the first quarter, Bo Hess connected with Drake McRae on a 47-yard touchdown pass with 6:30 left in the opening period, and Kevin Aguilera found paydirt from a yard out with 53 seconds left in the first quarter. Tre Stewart booted in five extra points to give Scott City the 35-0 lead after the first quarter.
After a dominating opening quarter, Scott City (8-0, 2-0 District 16) took a 41-0 lead at the break, thanks to a pair of field goals from Tre Stewart and Gustavo Gonzales from 20 yards out.
In the third quarter, Scott City closed out the scoring in the game in a matter of less than two minutes, which prompted a running clock. Their first score came with 8:11 remaining in the period on a 16-yard Kevin Lozano run to push the lead to 48-0 with the Stewart PAT. A little over a minute later, Draven McRae read the screen pass perfectly, and took a Lakin (2-6, 0-2) interception two yards to the end zone to push the final to 55-0, that included the Gonzales extra point kick.
Scott City’s defense did not allow a Lakin first down in the game and held the Broncs to minus-11 yards of total offense. Ironically, the last time the Beavers visited Lakin was on October 22, 2010, when they shutout the Broncs 43-0 and did not allow a first down in that contest. The 35 points in the first quarter was the most in one period since putting up 35 points in the opening quarter against Ellsworth on November 4, 2014.
Cooper Griffith led the ground attack for Scott City with 93 yards on six carries and three touchdowns, while Tre Stewart added 76 yards on seven carries. The Beavers had 294 yards on the ground and finished with 366 yards of offense on the night. Bo Hess completed all three of his passes for 72 yards and a touchdown toss to Drake McRae.
Lakin committed four turnovers in the game, and finished minus-13 yards rushing. Dawsen Shalberg had nine yards rushing on 11 carries and caught the lone Bronc completed pass for two yards from Hunter Kirby.
Scott City will travel to Cimarron for the District 16 championship on Thursday night at 7 pm. The Beavers have now clinched a playoff spot for the 10th consecutive year. Cimarron won at Southwestern Heights 58-24 to clinch their second straight playoff spot. The Bluejays are 6-2 on the season, while the Mustangs are 3-5 and will host Lakin on Thursday night to conclude their season.
