Scott City shuts out Hugoton in storm-shortened game

Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers opened up the 2018 season on the road at Hugoton against the Eagles, looking to get the season going with a statement. And that they did. The Beavers did whatever they wanted, and took care of Hugoton to kick off the season with a 35-0 win.

Scott City started the game marching it down the field on their opening drive, going 65 yards on eight plays. On fourth down from the three, Wyatt Hayes punched it in to give the Beavers a 7-0 lead, following the Moses Hinojos PAT. Scott City took advantage of an Eagle interception, going 63 yards on five plays. Hayes scored his second touchdown of the night on a 44-yard run with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter to go up 14-0 with the Hinojos extra point.

In the second quarter, the Beavers continued their domination. An eight-play, 44-yard drive was capped off by a Cale Goodman six-yard run with 6:04 remaining in the half to go up 21-0. Scott City wasn’t finished. A four-minute drive closed the scoring in the half with a 12-yard pass from Harrison King to Marshal Faurot with four seconds left before the break. Moses Hinojos knocked in the extra point to go up 28-0.

Scott City would score on their second possession of the second half after holding the Eagles on downs. It took just one play to get on the scoreboard. With 4:55 left in the third quarter, Wyatt Hayes found the end zone for a third time with a 62-yard run. Moses Hinojos booted in the extra point to make the score 35-0. Scott City was driving late in the third quarter, when the game was suspended with 1:59 remaining in the third quarter. After about a 30-minute delay, the game was called due to lightning in the area.

Wyatt Hayes led the Scott City rushing attack, with a career-high 222 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns, while Brandon Winderlin had 35 yards on six carries, and Hunter Yager added 22 yards on seven carries. Harrison King went 5-6 through the air for 44 yards with a touchdown. Marshal Faurot caught the touchdown pass as part of his two receptions for 18 yards, while Winderlin had two grabs for 19 yards. The Beavers finished with 334 yards of offense. Defensively, Scott City forced two turnovers. Parker Vulgamore had two interceptions.

Hugoton had only one first down in the game, which came in the third quarter. Nick Gold had 17 yards on five carries, while Dawson Kerbow had seven yards rushing on seven carries. The Eagles finished with 20 yards on the ground. Riggs Martin went 2-6 through the air with 23 yards and two interceptions. Kerbow had both catches for 23 yards. Hugoton finished 43 yards of offense.

With the win, Scott City has now won their ninth straight game in the series, and have scored 35 points against Hugoton for the third straight year.

Scott City is 1-0 for the second straight year, and will play at Holcomb next Friday night. The Longhorns defeated Goodland 34-12. Hugoton is 0-1, and will host Colby next Friday. Colby defeated Ulysses 43-20.
