Scott City Shuts Out Hugoton
Hugoton, KS (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City erupted for 21 second quarter points, as they earned their first shutout win of the season, as well as earned a share of the GWAC title, in a 41-0 win in Hugoton Friday night.
After going three and out on their opening drive, Scott City put together a five play, 61-yard drive for their lone score of the opening quarter, capped off by a 10-yard run by Dalton Buehler with 5:14 remaining in the first period. Brett O’Neil’s extra point made it 7-0 Scott City.
After being held at the goal line on fourth and goal at the Eagle one yard line, Scott City got an interception by Brenner Wells and returned it to the Hugoton 18. Four plays later, Wells finished the drive off with a two-yard plunge with 9:38 to go in the first half. O’Neil’s extra point made it 14-0. The Beaver defense would force a turnover on downs at the Scott City 28 yard line, after a 46-yard run by Eagle quarterback Yates Sutton. It would be a three-play, 71-yard drive that gave Scott City their third score of the night. Brett O’Neil found Tyler Hess for a 44-yard touchdown pitch and catch to make it 20-0 with 6:07 remaining before halftime, as the PAT failed. The Beavers weren’t done yet in the second quarter. Scott City would take a 28-0 lead with 1:17 left before halftime on an 11-yard pass play from Brett to Trey O’Neil. Brett would find Brenner Wells for the two-point conversion that capped off a 75-yard drive that burned only a minute 47 off the clock.
Scott City scored in six plays to begin the second half, with all plays on the ground. Brenner Wells found paydirt for the second time of the night from 10 yards out with 9:43 remaining in the third quarter to make it 34-0. On Hugoton’s opening play of the second half, Eagle quarterback Yates Sutton fumbled the ball, and Scott City recovered the ball at the 23 yard line. The very next play, the Beavers forced the 40-point continuous clock rule, as Brett O’Neil threw to a wide open Drew Kite from 23 yards out. Kite kicked in the extra point for the final point of the night to make it 41-0. Both teams went back and forth for the final 21 minutes of the game in a running clock.
Scott City’s defense forced four turnovers, and scored 21 points off turnovers. Brett O’Neil had three scoring tosses in the game. He now has nine touchdown passes this year, and has yet to throw an interception. Dalton Buehler rushed for his 10th touchdown of the season in the first quarter. Hugoton was shut out for the second time in as many weeks.
Scott City (5-0, 4-0 GWAC) wraps up league play next Friday night at Goodland. The Cowboys lost to Ulysses at home 48-13. Hugoton (1-4, 0-4) takes a three-game hiatus from GWAC foes, and they go to Southwestern Heights next Friday for a final tuneup before district play. The Mustangs crushed Syracuse 69-22.
