Scott City returns to district play against Russell

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Week five of high school football may feel like true fall weather, as Scott City plays their third straight home game, as they entertain the Russell Broncos.

Russell is 2-2 on the year entering tonight’s game. The Broncos won their first two games, and opened up district play with a 42-20 setback to the Concoradia Panthers last Friday night at Harold M. Clark Stadium. After a six-all tie in the first quarter, the Panthers put up 22 second quarter points to take a 28-12 halftime lead. In the loss, Russell actually outgained Concordia 398-382, and had 214 passing yarsds in the contest. Quarterback Austin Price accounted for 306 of the yards and passed for two touchdowns. So far this year, the Broncos have averaged 27 points per game and 310 yards of offense, with a balanced attack. Defensively, they have allowed an average of 25 points per game. A.J. Oste leads them with 49 tackles and a defensive touchdown.

Scott City is 4-0 on the season, after a 47-0 win over Ulysses on Homecoming last Friday night. The Beavers opened the game up with a 33-point second quarter burst. A running clock was used in the second half. Wyatt Hayes had four total touchdowns to lead Scott City, inlcuding a 79-yard punt return. He surpassed the 3,000-yard rushing mark for his career. Parker Gooden connected with Marhsall Faurot on a touchdown pass, and Parker Vulgamore and Brandon Winderlin each scored touchdowns. Defensively, the Beavers limited the Tigers to 111 yards of offense. Scott City is outscoring their opponents 42-0 on average through the first four games, and winning the yardage battle by a margin of 341-66. Wyatt Hayes has rushed for over 500 yards and has 11 rushing touchdowns, and Parker Vulgamore has nearly 200 passing yards and two scoring tosses in two an a half games played. Defensively, Cale Goodman and Hayes lead the team in tackles with 25.

Scott City leads the all-time series with Russell 2-0. They last played in 2013, when Scott City won 54-0 in the regular season finale, also in district play. With a win tonight, Scott City would win their 30th consecutive district game going back to week nine of the 2008 season and win their 600th game in the program’s history.

Tonight is also Military Appreciation Night at Darner Field. The Beavers will be wearing special uniforms tonight and a special “SC” decal on their helmets.
