Scott City returns home, splits games with Great Bend

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The stretch of five games in nine days is officially over for Scott City. Saturday night at Scott Community High School, the Beavers hosted Great Bend in a non-league doubleheader, as both teams would earn a split the doubleheader. In the first game, Great Bend ran away in the second half from Scott City in a 66-19 thumping, while the Beaver boys held off charge after charge from the Panthers in a 51-47 win. 

Scott City played Great Bend tough through the first half, despite trailing by double digits for most of it. The Lady Panthers used a pair of 11-0 in the first and second quarter to lead by as many as 32-12 with under two minutes left before halftime. Scott City responded with the final four points of the half to cut the deficit to 16 at 32-16. The Lady Beavers scored the first two points of the second half to cut it to 32-18. Unfortunatly, they would score only one more point in the game. Great Bend held Scott City (2-15) without a point for the final 13:03 of the game. During that time frame, the Lady Panthers scored the final 27 points of the contest, en route to a dominating victory. Great Bend (15-2) saw Morgan Harwood score a game-high 15 points and Kaylie Doll add 10. Leading the way for Scott City was Bailey Nickel with six and Kelly Wycoff with four.

The finale of the night turned out to be a good competitive game. Scott City led the entire way, and was tied on two occasions. It would be a 14-7 Beaver lead after the first quarter, and they would push their lead to 22-11 with 6:02 remaining before halftime. That’s when it looked like Scott City was going to run away with the game. Great Bend had other plans. They scored eight straight to pull to within 22-19 midway through the second quarter. The Beavers would take a 27-23 lead at halftime. It seemed everytime Scott City would drain a three, the Panthers would hit one of their own. After an early shot for the Beavers to push their lead to eight early in the third, Great Bend pulled to within one wiht 5:13 left in the third at 30-29. Scott City’s biggest lead in the second half ended up being 40-32 with 1:04 left in the third frame, after a 7-0 run. In the fourth quarter, the Panthers tied the game at 41 with 5:18 remaining, which capped off a 6-1 run to begin the final period. The Beavers grew their lead to four, after that, and they never surrendered the lead the rest of the way. It was also the last time Great Bend (6-11) hit a field goal, as they scored their final six points from the foul line. Chris Pounds sank his second of two foul shots with five seconds left to clinch the win for the Beavers. Scott City (15-2) saw two players score double figures, led by Trey O’Neil with 23 points and hit five three-pointers, while Brayden Strine added 12, and was perfect from the field. The Panthers were led by Tre Ibarra with 11 points off the bench.

Next for Scott City is a GWAC doubleheader on Tuesday at Holcomb, while Great Bend travels to Dodge City for a WAC doubleheader on Tuesday.
