Scott City pulls away from Ulysses
Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Both Scott City and Ulysses entered Friday night with two wins against common opponents, and both with similar margin of victory. At Maxwell Field, it would end up being a one-sided outcome. Other than the final two minutes of the first half, Scott City was able to control the game and the clock, and take home a 27-7 win over the Tigers.
The Beavers were able to take advantage of short field on their opening drive. An eight-play, 43-yard drive in just over three minutes was finished on a Hunter Yager 15-yard run with 7:10 remaining in the first quarter to give them the early edge 7-0.
In the second period of play, both teams would turn the ball over three times. Both teams would score one touchdown off turnovers. Six plays after a Kevin Herman interception, Cale Goodman finished the drive off with a 10-yard run with 5:02 remaining in the second quarter to go up 14-0 with the Alexis Reyes PAT. With 2:04 left before halftime, the Beavers were faced with a third down at their own 31 yard line. Ulysses linebacker Koy Kenny intercepted a Harrison King pass, and returned it 32 yards for a Tiger touchdown to pull them to within 14-7 after the Maurice Ochoa extra point. That would be the score at the break.
Scott City’s opening drive of the second half would set the tone for the rest of the night. An 11-play, 65-yard drive that took off over five minutes of the clock was finished by Parker Gooden from five yards out with 6:37 left in the third quarter to go up 21-7 with the Reyes PAT.
The Beavers would close the scoring out with 7:19 left in the game on an eight-yard run by Brandon Winderlin that capped off a 75-yard drive. The score would be 27-7 Scott City, after the extra point was missed.
Scott City and Ulysses would trade possessions for the rest of the night, as the Beavers won their sixth straight in the series.
Scott City would roll up 296 yards on the ground. Hunter Yager had 112 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown, while Cale Goodman had 97 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown. Harrison King was 6-13 passing for 61 yards, with an interception. Jackson Lewis was the leading receiver with 33 yards on two catches. Scott City finished with 357 yards and 21 first downs.
Ulysses was held to a season-low 98 yards. Jett Moyer was 10-24 passing for 93 yards with four interceptions. Yahir Alvarado had two catches for 36 yards. Oscar Martinez led the rushing with two carries for 10 yards. The Tigers had only five first downs, as they finished with five rushing yards.
With the win, Scott City has won six straight in the series, and lead the all-time series 41-30-1. Through four games, the Beavers have not allowed an offensive touchdown for a second straight year. It was the 18th consecutive GWAC win for Scott City.
Up next for Scott City is a district game at Russell next Friday. The Beavers are 4-0 on the season. Russell is 0-4, after a 44-18 loss to Concordia at home to open up district play on Friday. Ulysses drops to 2-2 on the year, and will be at Pittsburg next Friday. The Purple Dragons are 3-1 after a 28-0 win over rival Fort Scott on Friday night.
