Scott City and Pueblo East split in final day of Southwest Classic

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On the final day of the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic on Saturday, the Scott City Beavers split a doubleheader with the Pueblo East Eagles. Pueblo East would win the girls game 60-26, while the Scott City Boys picked up their third win of the season in a 59-33 victory. Saturday’s games were played at Garden City High School.

The first game of the afternoon between these two teams saw the Lady Eagles lead from wire to wire. Pueblo East (5-2) led 9-0 before Scott City would score their first basket of the game, and cruised to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter. In the first half, the Lady Eagles would end up with nine, eight, and 11, and took a 44-18 lead into the locker room. Throughout the game, the Lady Beavers (1-2) scored on back to back possessions three times. The second half saw both teams slow down, showing signs of fatigue in playing three games in as many days. Pueblo East had a 56-25 lead after three quarters, and a running clock was used in the final period, as the Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Beaver 4-1 to make the final 60-26. Leading the way for Pueblo East was Kayla Albo with 15 points, Jailen Minich with 12 points, while Salik Winston and Kassidi Day each had 10 points. Scott City was led by Bailey Latta’s nine and Kiana Yager’s eight points.

Scott City (3-0) led 11-5 after the first quarter, and grew their lead to 26-15 at the break. In the second half, the Beavers pulled away, and used a 10-0 run to lead 46-26 with 6:25 left. Their biggest lead would be at 2 at 55-26 with 3:08 left, and cruised to the 26-point victory. Scott City had three double figure scorers, led by Trey O’Neil’s 18 points, all in the first three quarters, while Sloan Baker added 13 and Chantz Yager finished with 11.
