Scott City, Lakin split non-league doubleheader

Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Coming off midseason tournaments over this past weekend, Scott City and Lakin met up on the hardwood at Lakin Middle School on Tuesday night. At the end of the night, the Beavers and Broncs split a non-league doubleheader, as Lakin took the girls game 48-17, while the Scott City boys took the nightcap 62-40.

After a 0-4 start to the season, Lakin had been playing much better basketball as of late. Scott City saw starter Madison Orr out of the lineup with sickness and was without Paige Winderlin for the third straight game, due to an injury suffered last week in Colby. The Lady Broncs led 19-0 after the first quarter, and 23-0 before the Lady Beavers scored their first points of the game. Lakin (7-6) would push their lead to 35-9 at the break. In the second half, points were a premium for both teams. After a 45-14 Bronc lead after three quarters, Lakin and Scott City (3-9) both scored three fourth quarter points. Lakin had two players in double figures, led by Robin Ritsema with 12 points and Mariah Watkins with 11. Scott City got seven points from Bailey Latta, with three coming on a half court shot right before the halftime buzzer.

Out of Lakin’s 16 points in the first quarter, 15 came from three point range. After the first eight minutes, the Beavers clamped down on defense, allowing just 24 points the rest of the way. Scott City (11-1) used a 15-4 second quarter run to lead 26-20 at the break. The Broncs scored the first basket of the second half, only to see the Beavers use a 12-2 run, and push their lead to 48-27 after three quarters. Lakin (6-7) scored the first two points of the fourth quarter, and Scott City would counter with an 8-1 run to push their lead to the biggest of the night to 56-30 midway through the final quarter. The Broncs would be held to a season-low 40 points, and Scott City coasted to their fifth straight win. Scott City had two players in double figures, led by Brett Meyer and Sloan Baker with 15 points. Lakin saw Alex Perez score 13 points, while Ryder Yakel added 12.
