Scott City hosts Lakin to tip off second half of the season
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tonight begins the second half of the regular season, as they begin a stretch of three home games in their next four games, as the Lakin Broncs will come to SCHS for a doubleheader.
Lakin comes in on a bit of a hot streak tonight on the girls side, winning six out of their last eight games, including a 3-1 stretch in the Hi-Plains League Tournament, capped off by a 74-47 win over the Satanta Lady Indians on Saturday. So far this year, the 6-7 Lady Broncs have been led by 6-1 sophomore Robin Retsema, who averages 10 points and nearly nine rebounds a game. So far this year, Lakin has averaged 46 points through 13 games. Scott City has improved their play over the last couple games. The Lady Beavers are at 2-10 on the year, after a 49-33 setback to McCook on Saturday in the fourth place game of the Paul Wintz/Tom Bowen Orange & Black Classic in Colby. Scott City was tied at the half at 26, and were only able to put up seven second half points in the loss. Bailey Nickel, who was selected to the All-Tournament Team in Colby, continues to lead the Lady Beavers in scoring and has bumped up her season average to 16 points and nine rebounds a game. Scott City has also bumped their point total in the last couple ballgames, and are now averaging 35 points a contest.
The second half of the doubleheader features a pair of boys teams with some offensive firepower. Lakin comes in with a 5-5 record, after their 65-55 setback to Elkhart Saturday afternoon in the fifth place game of the Hi-Plains League Tournament in Garden City. The Broncs are a .500 team since Christmas, posting wins over Wichita County, Stanton County and Sublette. Their win against Wichita County was a return trip to Leoti for now Bronc Coach Nate Schmitt, who coached the Indians the previous two seasons. Lakin is led by sophomore Ryder Yakel, who averages 14 points, and has drained 28 three’s on the season. Scott City has won nine straight games after starting off their season with a loss, and capped off another Orange & Black Championship with a 71-57 win over Palmer Ridge on Saturday at the Colby Community Building. The Beavers placed three on the All-Tournament Team with Trey O’Neil, Brett Meyer, and Sloan Baker, with O’Neil winning the tournament’s MVP. O’Neil continues to lead Scott City in scoring with 24 points a game. Since the Christmas Break, the Beavers scoring average has increased, scoring 68 points a game in those six games.
