Scott City hosts Hugoton in district battle
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two teams with 3-1 records are set to face off at Darner Field in Scott City, as the Beavers host the Hugoton Eagles in Class 3A, District 8 play. It is also homecoming tonight for Scott City.
Hugoton suffered their first defeat last Friday night, as Colby scored late and held off Hugoton 21-17 in a battle of the Eagles. Colby led 14-3 at the break, before Hugoton’s surge in the second half. Miguel Hernandez had 17 carries for 251 yards in the loss, as they are a run-heavy team again this year, averaging 33 points and around 350 yards of offense, while giving up 14 points and 225 yards. Hugoton fell to Colby for the first time since 2021, and are sitting 0-1 in district play.
Scott City is coming off a 57-8 road win at Ulysses last Friday night in their final non-district game. The Beavers led 16-8 after the first quarter, before putting up 27 second quarter points to blow the game open. They put up over 400 rushing yards, and had nearly 500 yards in the game. Through four games, Scott City is averaging 34 points and under 400 yards, while yielding 14 poitns per game and 225 yards of offense. Camden Vulgamore has passed for over 500 yards and has rushed for nearly 300 yards this year, while Cayden Couchman has over 300 rushing yards. Both Vulgamore and Couchman have four rushing scores.
This will be the 46th meeting between the schools, as Scott City holds a 34-10-1 series lead. The Beavers won 28-6 last year at Hugoton.
