Scott City hosts Goodland in district opener
Scott City, Kan. (wesetrnkansasnews.com)—District play begins tonight for Class 3A, as Scott City returns home for the first time in three weeks, as they play host to the Goodland Cowboys in a District 6 matchup.
Goodland will be on the road for the first time in 2020, as they enter with a 2-1 record, after a 23-17 victory over Lakin last Friday night at Cowboy Stadium. The Cowboys trailed 17-15 with just under three minutes left, and were able to put together a scoring drive in a minute to take the lead with around 90 seconds remaining. Goodland had a balanced attack, with 152 rushing yards and 146 passing yards against the Broncs. Lakin rushed for 239 yards in the game. The Cowboys are 2-1 for the first time since 2013 with the win, as they have 28 points and 313 yards of offense per game, and have allowed 25 points and just under 300 yards a contest.
Scott City has dropped two straight, after a 22-13 loss at Cimarron last Friday night. After a scoreless first half, the Bluejays led 3-0 after three quarters and led 9-0 with under six minutes left. The Beavers would score all 13 points within a minute and led 13-9 with 2:31 left. However, the Bluejays struck back to take the lead with 1:30 left, and had a pick-six to lead 22-13 with 56 seconds left. Scott City outgained Cimarron in the game 261-186. Through three games, the Beavers are 1-2, and have averaged 14 points and just over 250 yards so far, and have allowed 200 yards and 17 points per contest. The offense has been balanced so far this year, with around 130 passing yards and 120 rushing yards per game.
The last time Goodland entered with a better record when facing Scott City was in 2003. That was also the last time the Cowboys won in the series. Scott City leads the all-time series 36-11, and have won 16 straight in the series. The Beavers have outscored Goodland 200-0 over the past four seasons.
