Scott City, Holcomb renew rivalry
Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two GWAC schools in neighboring counties will face off at Holcomb High School, as the Longhorns will play host to Scott City in the second and final meeting of the season.
In the first game, Scott City is trying to pull off a stunner, as well as stop an eight-game losing streak. The 2-15 Lady Beavers scored only three points in the first half in a 66-19 loss to Great Bend Saturday night at home. They are also trying to pick up their first league win of the season, as Bailey Nickel continues to lead the team with a 14-point per game average. Holcomb is coming off a big home win over in-county rival Garden City 51-48 on Saturday. The Lady Longhorns are 15-2 on the season, and enter tonight’s game riding a four-game win streak. They also come into tonight trying to stay atop of the league standings and sub-state standings. Holcomb is tied for first in the GWAC with a 6-1 record and sit in second place in the Class 3A-Cimarron Sub-State, and are led by Taylor Deniston and Haley Heydman with around 17 points a contest. It was a 62-27 Lady Longhorn win in their previous meeting January 14.
The finale of the evening should be a good one, as the two teams look to be in the front-running of the GWAC title after tonight. Scott City picked up a 51-47 win over Great Bend on Saturday to push their record to 15-2, and have already clinched the top seed in the Class 4A, Division II-Goodland Sub-State. The Beavers are led by Trey O’Neil’s 22.5 points a game, as he dropped in five three’s in Saturday’s win. Also at 6-1 in the GWAC is Holcomb, who comes into tonight’s game at 14-3, and they currently set in a first place tie with Cimarron for the top seed of the Class 3A-Cimarron Sub-State. The Longhorns are coming off an emotional win over Garden City Saturday 66-55. They enter the game tonight with a five-game winning streak. Holcomb is led in scoring by Trey Sleep’s 17 points a game. Scott City won the first meeting on January 14 73-53. This is the second and final time the teams will meet up this year, after playing three times in a season the previous three years.
