Scott City, Holcomb match up in key GWAC showdown

football schedule

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–While tonight’s game may not have any implications on the postseason, it will most certainly have an impact on how the Great West Activities Conference standings shape up moving forward. Two league foes who have been in the top half for the majority of the leagues formation face off tonight as Holcomb hosts Scott City.

Scott City will hit the road for the first time since week one, and enters Holcomb at 3-0 overall, 2-0 in league play, after a 42-14 win over the Goodland Cowboys last Friday night at Darner Field. The Beavers defense scored for the second straight game, on an interception return for a touchdown, and sacked Cowboy quarterback Levi Archer 13 times, while holding Goodland to minus-69 yards on the ground. The Cowboys, however, threw for 262 yards. Scott City was led by the senior duo of Cooper Griffith and Wyatt Kropp, who both rushed for two scores, while Kropp caught a touchdown pass from Bo Hess. Both Griffith and Kropp have five total touchdowns on the season. The Beavers are averaging 339 yards of offense and scoring nearly 36 points a game, while holding opponents to nearly 12 points a game and limiting opponents to 139 yards a game.

Holcomb brings their high-powered offense into tonight’s game looking to get back on the winning side of things, following their 34-20 setback to Ulysses last Friday night. In last week’s game, Holcomb failed to score inside the Tiger 10 yard line three times in the loss. The Longhorns return home for the first time since week one, and fell behind the Tigers 14-0 after the first quarter, but were unable to catch up. Trey Teeter leads the Holcomb attack, throwing for 788 yards and seven touchdowns. The four-year starter also has a 62% completion rate for an offense that is averaging 453 yards per game and 39 points, while surrendering an average of 16 points a contest. Teeter threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another in last weeks game, as the Longhorns had 363 yards of offense. They gave up 478 yards of offense, with 412 on the ground, despite running 15 more plays than Ulysses.

Scott City and Holcomb have battled tightly in two of the last three seasons. The Beavers won 21-7 in 2012, 31-28 in 2013 on a last second field goal, and in 2014 49-6. They lead the all-time series with the Longhorns 11-1, with Holcomb’s lone win coming in 2007 13-12.

Kickoff at Holcomb will be at 7 pm. Pregame coverage for Scott City begins at 6:30 on KSKL, Mix 94 for the Scott City broadcast, and also at 6:30 on AM 1030 KBUF for the Holcomb broadcast.
