Scott City hits the road to face Hugoton
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Great West Activities Conference is in its seventh year of existence. This season, it may be the most competitive it has ever been. Tonight’s game at Hugoton should be no different, as Scott City visits Hugoton in a 7 pm kickoff.
Scott City got their first win of the season last Friday night, and the first of the Jim Turner era, as they drilled Cimarron 52-7 at Darner Field. The Beavers scored 45 seconds into the game, and also scored on four of their first five possessions, taking leads of 21-0 after the first quarter and 28-0 at the break. They also led 45-0 after the third quarter, highlighted by Kyle Cure’s 43-yard interception return for a touchdown. Scott City had a balanced attack, going for a season-best 367 yards of offense, and forced a season-high five turnovers. Bo Hess had three touchdown passes in the game, pushing his season total to four, and had 374 passing yards through three games. Wyatt Hayes leads the ground attack with 307 yards and three touchdowns, and caught a 62-yard touchdown pass in last week’s win. The defense is giving up an average of 23 points through three games.
Hugoton saw their home opener spoiled last Friday night, as they fell 24-21 to the Colby Eagles. After a scoreless first quarter, Colby took a 10-8 lead, only to see Hugoton score on their opening possession of the second half to grab a 14-10 lead. Colby scored 14 unanswered, and held off Hugoton late. Senior quarterback Valentino Degollado threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns last week, and has 541 passing yards and seven touchdowns for the season. Pedro Ordonez leads the ground game with 247 yards and a touchdown this season. The Eagles average 353 yards and 26 points a game, while allowing 17 points a contest.
Scott City and Hugoton will meet up for the 40th time. The Beavers lead the all-time series 28-10-1, and have won the last six meetings. Scott City won 47-7 last year, and Hugoton has not won in the series since 2005, when they won 19-13.
