Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s the first of two straight road games for the Scott City Beaver football team tonight, as they face the Goodland Cowboys in not only a GWAC battle, but a district game with plenty of potential playoff implications. Friday night’s 7 pm kickoff is the first time that the Beavers will play at Cowboy Stadium in Goodland, after the last two games have been played in Scott City.

Scott City clinched at least a share of the Great West Activities Conference crown last Friday night on Senior Night, as they knocked off the Colby Eagles 21-14 in their district opener at Darner Field, pushing their record to 7-0. The Beavers started with the games first 21 points, before the Eagles rallied early in the third quarter to pull to within 21-14. Colby took advantage of short field and two turnovers to get back in the game. However, Scott City was able to shake that off and score the games final 21 points, outgaining the Eagles in the process 453-219. It was just the second time this year that the Beavers had allowed an opponent to gain over 200 yards of offense. The 453 yards were a season-best last week with 348 coming on the ground. This year, Scott City has been outscoring their opponents by an average of 33-9, and outgaining their foes 357-144. Wyatt Hayes leads a balanced ground attack with 750 yards and 12 touchdowns.

A last second field goal miss denied Goodland their third win in a 20-19 heartbreaker at Concordia last Friday night, dropping them to 2-5. The score was tied at 0 after the first and 6-6 at the break. Goodland took a 19-12 lead in the second half before the Panthers drove down the field and took a 20-19 lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Cowboys forced a turnover on downs in the red zone, and marched it to the Concordia five late in the game, before the field attempt went wide. Goodland would outgain the Panthers 359-219, and had a 225-33 yard edge through the air. Concordia only attempted one pass, which went for a touchdown. Levi Archer has thrown for 1055 yards and 11 touchdowns this year, and also leads the team with 662 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns through seven games. Goodland has lost three of their five games by a combined 12 points, and in their two other losses were by 13 and 15 points. So far, they’ve outscored opponents 26-22 and outgained their opponents by an average 303-247 in seven games.

Scott City has won the last 13 games in the series. Last season, the Beavers shut out a short-handed Cowboy team 56-0. Goodland’s last win came in 2003 by a score of 42-6. The Beavers have also won their last eight games in Goodland dating back to 1998, and lead the all-time series 34-11.

Kickoff is set for 7 pm at Cowboy Stadium. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 on Mix 94.5, online at westernkansasnews.com/mix94, on the TuneIn app and on the Mix 94.5 app.
