Scott City heads to Colby to begin district play

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s been since 2005 that Scott City has played outside of the Class 3A classification. That all changes tonight, as the Beavers play their first-ever Class 4A, Division II district game, with a 7 pm kickoff at Dennen Field against fellow GWAC member Colby.

Scott City has won four straight, and enter with a 4-2 record, and 2-1 in league play. Last Friday night, the Beavers stepped out of league competition, and picked up a 41-0 win in Wellington to spoil their homecoming. It was Scott City’s first shutout win of the season. They scored on four of their five first half possessions, and scored two more times in the second half to cruise to the easy win. Defensively, the Beavers held Wellington to 60 yards of offense, all on the ground, while amassing 373 yards of offense. In their last four games, Scott City has outscored their opponents by an average of 45-5, allowing no more than seven points a game. 

Colby started the season at 3-0, their best start to a season since 1992, and have dropped three consecutive, as they fell to Norton at home last Friday night 52-41. The Eagles trailed 14-0 after the first quarter, and 21-13 at the break, but could not handle the versatility of the Bluejay offense, who put up 519 yards of offense. That was a season high that the Eagles allowed, that included giving up 407 yards on the ground. Colby put up 393 yards of offense, with 219 coming through the air, but threw six interceptions. The Eagles are balanced on offense, averaging 169 yards through the air, and average 153 on the ground per game, while scoring nearly 33 points a game. They give up 29 points and 383 yards per game. 

Tonight’s game will be 40th all-time meeting in the series, with Scott City holding a 24-15 edge. The Beavers have won the last 12 games in the series, including a 35-6 win last year in Scott City. Colby last won in the series on October 15, 1999, with a 14-7 win. The last time these teams matched up in district play was in 2003.
