Scott City girls tennis wins Ulysses Invite, cross country teams run well at Wamego
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a good way to end the week for the Scott City girls tennis and cross country teams. The tennis team was able to get to the top of the team standings for the first time this year at the Ulysses Invitational on Thursday, while the cross country teams saw the girls finish second and the boys seventh in the competitive Wamego invitational on Saturday.
For the girls tennis team, it was their first time winning a meet this season. The No. 1 Doubles team of Brenda Aguirre/Emily Glenn, and the No. 2 Doubles team of Dallie Metheny and Yami Sanchez picked up first place finishes, while the No. 1 Singles and No. 2 Singles players Cynthia Gonzalez and Lynae Haupt finished third. Up next will be a meet Phillipsburg on Tuesday.
In Wamego, the Scott City cross country teams got to see what the 4A State Cross Country course looked like, competing in the Class 4A division on Saturday. Baldwin won the girls division with 82 points, while Scott City was in second with 122 points. Makaela Stevens finished in seventh fifth place to lead the Lady Beavers with a time of 21:05.00, followed by Dulce Ayala in 12th (21:29.70), Trella Davis in 29th (22:04.20), Megan Vance in 32nd (22:07.50), Olivia Prieto finished 57th (22:56.30), Kodi Rogers was 109th (25:20.60) and Aly Tarango came in 115th (25:32.00). As for the boys, they finished in seventh place as a team with 200 points. Circle won the meet easily with 66 points, and Hugoton was second with 85. Scott City had a total of 200 points. Jack Thomas cruised to another win, breaking his own school record with a time of 16:05.30, Conner LeBeau came in 16th place (17:49.30), while Austin Rios placed 48th (18:52.20), Robert Apodaca 62nd (19:12.00), Theron Tucker 83rd (19:47.00), and Angel Rodriguez 133rd (21:16.00). They will run at the Hugoton Invitational on Saturday.
