Scott City girls tennis qualfies player for state, cross country at has good showing at Lakin

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City girls tennis team was able to qualify one player for the Class 3-2-1A State Tournament over the weekend, and the cross country teams continue to make strides, with a first place finish for the girls, and a second place finish for the boy, at the Lakin Invitational on Saturday.

For the girls tennis team, Abbie LeBeau finished sixth at the Class 3-2-1A Regional meet in WaKeeney on Friday and Saturday, qualifying her for the state meet in Pratt on Friday and Saturday. LeBeau would go 3-2 on the day to qualify her for her first state tournament. Other singles player Cynthia Gonzalez was knocked out of the tournament in her only match. For the doubles teams, Lanae Haupt & Yami Sanchez went 1-2 on Friday, and fell one spot short of qualifying for the state tournament. Also at doubles, Giselle Aguirre & Marisela Chavez lost their only match of the day on Friday. Ellsworth and Victoria tied with 11 points, but Ellsworth won the regional title on a higher winning percentage.

The coss country teams got their meet in at Lakin on Saturday, as the girls team won the meet, and the boys finished second. For the Lady Beavers, they won with a team score of 16 points, while Guymon was a distant second with 67. Leading the way was Clare Hawkins finishing third with a time of 20:28, followed by Dulce Ayala in fourth with a time of 20:36 and Piper Wasinger in fifth, running a 20:44. Megan Vance was seventh (21:03), Kairae Berry was 10th (21:40), Samantha Aguilar 32nd (23:09.69) and Kodi Rogers was 40th (24:19). On the boys side, Scott City finished second with 92 points. Guymon won with 23 points and Stanton County was third with 106 points. Jaxon Kough led the boys team with an eighth place finish in a time of 17:04.65, followed by Eric Frances in 11th with a time of 17:07. Theron Tucker was 16th (17:17), Roberto Apodaca 17th (17:32), Logan Yeadon 54th (19:30) and Eric Shapland 64th (20:26). Scott City will run at the GWAC meet in Ulysses on Thursday.
