Scott City Girls Tennis players pushing for varsity spots

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Every year the tennis season goes in a flash. In fact, it is one of the shortest schedules time wise, with the regional competition usually starting the first weekend in October, or about six weeks into the school year. With their competition schedule beginning in a week, there are plenty of positions open on the varsity.

The 2016 team consists of 19 girls, slightly down from last year. However, there are seven seniors on this years squad. The one thing that is fairly certain is who their singles players will be. Krystal Appel, a doubles qualifier for state last year, will occupy one of the singles positions, as will fellow senior Emma Price. Price had some misfortune last year at regionals, having to retire during a match that was one spot away from qualifying for state.

As for the schedule, it is jam packed for the varsity. They begin Saturday, August 27 in Liberal, and end the regular season Saturday, October 1. With three full teams and more than eight varsity meets on the slate, there will be some junior varsity players competing in varsity play. A player is only allowed eight meets in a regular season.
