Scott City girls finish second, boys eighth at Abilene regional

Abilene, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a rainy day at the Class 4A regional meet in Abilene the Scott City Beaver Track & Field team took the stage in hopes of qualifying for the state track & field championship in Wichita. For the girls it was a second place finish in a tie with McPherson, while the boys placed eighth in the 16-team field.

The girls were able to get multiple qualifications from a pair of their seniors. Kelly Wycoff dominated the short distances by winning the 100 (12.68), 200 (25.64) and 400m (57.88) dashes. Bailey Nickel was an individual qualifier by placing third in the 100m high hurdles (16.21), and fourth in the triple jump (33-0.75). The 4x400m relay placed third, consisting of Nickel, Aubrey Davis, Paige Winderlin and Wycoff, with a time of 4:11.41. 

In the boys division, Brett Meyer was the regional champion in the 800m run with a time of 2:01.36, Brayden Strine placed third in the 400m dash (51.75). The 4x800m relay finished second (8:19.99), with Meyer, Irvin Lozano, Miguel Chavez and Strine, and the 4x400m relay finished first with Strine, Drake McRae, Wyatt Kropp and Meyer, in a time of 3:29.27.

Teamwise, Concordia took the girls title with 59 points, outlasting Scott City and McPherson by eight points. Goodland won the boys side with 72 points, while Royal Valley finished in second with 58 points, and Buhler placed third with 53 points.
